Product Description

Product Description

"The Production Manual" teaches all aspects of getting a job to production. It is a very practical 'hands-on' guide or manual for graduate students who tend to leave college without any of these skills. It will teach students how to use the knowledge they have gained during their course. In the case of printed work, this would include; plate-making, resolution, printing techniques - everything to ensure that the project is produced as required. The book also shows the inspirational side of production, for example, creative printing and how to achieve tricky effects like duotones and halftones. All the areas that fall under the remit of graphic design are covered including exhibition, packaging and signage. This title is suitable for graduate students of graphic design, photography, media studies, fine art, industrial, and product design as they start out in their careers, those wanting to get even more out of the production process, practising graphic designers, and those teaching different aspects of design.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great graphics manual..., 13 Aug 2009
By Mr. Simon Watson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
No book can teach you graphics, or all about print and design, there is no substitute for experience. However this gives a wide overview of many of the disciplines that goes to make up being a graphic designer. If you are on a graphics course, or have just started out, then I would say you could do a lot worse than get this book and read it cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars The practical side of design, 12 May 2009
By Rich (London) - See all my reviews
This is a nice book for an area of design that's often neglected - the production stages.

It's very easy to spend all your design time on the computer now and not give much thought to how your design is going to come out.

This book covers everything you need to know on the practical side - paper formats, qualities, thicknesses and sizes, image types, colour channels, practical typography (kerning, leading, baselines, runaround), colours (pantone and spot), scanning, overprinting, bleed, registration, trim, gatefolds, printing methods, binding, embossing, debossing, folding, trimming, laminating, and so on and on.

An absolutely essential book as far as I'm concerned - deals with all the things you forget about.
