Product Description

Product Description

This title takes you through the process of making shows happen from the point of view of the production manager - the person responsible for everything on stage that is not an actor. It describes different types of productions, from small-scale amateur to international opera; the role, qualities and working life of backstage teams and finally, theatre administration. The book includes information and tips on how to: work with directors and designers; cost productions realistically; run production meetings; oversee the rehearsal process; manage a production team; co-ordinate the building, painting, propping and costuming of a show; and lead the production week and technical rehearsal. There are also sections on working safely together with health and safety legislation.

About the Author

Peter Dean is an experienced theatre practitioner and teacher with twenty years' experience in production and technical management. He has been responsible for the production management of 250 productions. He is deputy director of Technical Theatre at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

This guide is well written, with photocopiable templates and contains all the practical essentials that you would need to know and consider before and when getting a production up and running. It is one of the best books of its kind by far.

I bought this book when I was about to produce my first show. I got a few books about theatre how-to's and have always found the Crowood Press Practical Guides very useful.

This book is easy too read, offers enough detail without being too detailed and is most certainly written with practicality in mind. It most certainly gave me the tools (and by doing so the confidence) of producing my first show successfuly!!

Although the principles of Production Management do not change much over time, this book feels a little bit outdated. The content is very much appicable to now, but the lay-out of this book feels like it hasn't changed much since the 80's - that shouldn't hold you back though!

Also something to keep in mind when buying books about theatre subjects is that language and practices can differ slightly between the US and the UK - make sure you buy a book aimed at the right country!

This in many ways is a basic book about theater...I was expecting something a little more advanced. It is also very UK biased.
