Product Description

Product Description

The Procter Pest-Stop electronic bird scarer uses the hunting calls of sparrow hawks, falcons and owls to frighten other birds away. The unit can be installed on any type of wall, such as brick or wood. The bird scarer has a sensor that you can adjust so it covers a large area. Whenever a small animal crosses the path of sensor or invades the area that the sensor is watching, the unit will act and play its sound to effectively remove the birds from the area.

Two modes enable the user to set the unit to become motion sensitive—similar to as burglar alarm sensors in the home. Alternatively you can set the unit to play constantly. The unit also has a timer setting that can be set at intervals from 5 to 30 minutes. The unit is powered by the 12 volt mains and can cover an area of up to one acre.

1.0 out of 5 stars It does NOT scare ANY birds 13 April 2011

This product does not work.

I live in the countryside and I was able to test it against a large number of birds (large and small) that are populating my garden.

The sound is loud and clear. It does sound like real hunting calls of sparrow hawks, falcons and owls. That is the only good thing about it.

Unfortunately, it did not scare any type of birds (at least 8 types of birds, small and large, were in my garden who did not show any fear and ignored it).

Some birds actually appear to be attracted by the noises and come closer (pigeons) and some smaller birds completely ignore it by sitting next to it (within 1 metre) undisturbed by the noises it produces. There were other birds sitting much further away (about 50 metres, who also ignored it). Therefore, no matter the distance, all birds ignored it. So much for the manufacturer's claim of 1-acre coverage.

I also noticed that the PIR is not triggered by the birds (not even by large birds such as pigeons that were within 2 metres of it flapping their feathers). It also did not detect the smaller birds that were close to it (within 1 metre). The PIR is only triggered by a human. Therefore, I had to put it on a timer. When it did come on, the birds were ignoring it.

I returned it for a refund, as it does not work as advertised. Amazon's service was excellent (as usual) as they offered refund without problems.

CONCLUSION: this product did not scare any bird (small or large) in my garden. Also the PIR is not detecting the birds., which means it only works on a timer basis.

3.0 out of 5 stars May be good for open fields ? 17 Nov 2010
I live in a big city and wanted to place it in my balcony to send pigeons away. However the noises it makes can be heard by humans and are very annoying so I would say this is not suitable for urban areas, maybe for open fields. Did not have the chance to see if it is effective as I put it back in the box and sent it back the moment I heard the noises.

I bought this product to keep seagulls out of my pond. It is ignored by them and treated with contempt. My advice is do not buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars This seems to work 1 Dec 2011

This does seem to work. I have it in an out building which had been taken over by starlings but now they are gone. It could be coincidence they were moving on in any case but give it the benefit of the doubt.
