Product Description

Synopsis

In May 1967, Procol Harum smashed into the charts all over the world, and into chart history, with a song called "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Combining Gary Brooker's soulful voice, Keith Reid's enigmatic lyrics and Matthew Fisher's sweeping organ, it became one of the enduring anthems of the 1960s. Before they split in 1977 Procol Harum went on to make some of the best albums of the era, including classics such as "Shine on Brightly" and "A Salty Dog". This book, drawn from years of research by musician and novelist Claes Johansen, is an insightful look at one of Britain's finest ever rock acts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are you one of 14 million? 15 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This account of a group who thirty years after their major hit (owned by some 14 million people I believe) still make intermittent live appearances, is not your average bottom-kissing merchandise. It is written by someone who clearly appreciates the music and has had a good rapport with the musicians yet still has sufficient detachment to criticise that which he doesn't like. So if you WERE alive in the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties (or Nineties) and don't quite remember where you go after 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' (or indeed where you were before you heard it) this is your chance to find out...

For Claes Johansen this book has obviously been a labour of love , the mixture of factual with anecdotal makes for an absorbing read for both obsessives and casual readers alike . For those that don't know Claes has shone a light down some of the more obscure alleys of rock connections , Wilko Johnson and Gary Brooker at the same school ! well I never. I don't know if there is a rock family tree for Procul but from what Claes has laid out there would need to be a seriously large sheet of paper involved. So Claes how about something similar on the Tull !

3.0 out of 5 stars Valuable, But Flawed 29 Oct 2000
By Eric M. Van - Published on Amazon.com

Any Procol Harum fan will want this book for the wealth of information it gathers, especially about the band's early days. Johansen's musical insight, however, is limited and inconsistent, and he's almost painfully clueless about what Keith Reid's words -- the band's main attraction, of course -- are about (e.g., he doesn't seem aware that the narrator of "Crucifiction Lane" is Jesus, which, ahem, rather changes the meaning of the song, doesn't it?). And fans should check out procolharum.com for some commentary about the book's histotical accuracy.
3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Backgrounder 27 Feb 2013
By Mic Murdoch - Published on Amazon.com

Reading this book made me want to know more about this incredible musical unit called Procol Harum. This book covers the basic history of their formation, recordings, and member changes. I was hoping to learn a little more in detail about the background of their tunes, interesting stories behind them, and of course about the fascinating individuals who created all the incredible sound I've loved listening to since I first heard their "Whiter Shade Of Pale". Compared to the other PH bio book, "The Gohsts Of The Whiter Shade Of Pale" by Henry Scott-Irvine, however, I feel this book is written from a less objective perspective on the band members dynamics and their creative efforts. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it because I understand the passion this author had in pursuing this project. If I can give a half a star, this book will be 3.5.

Loved it --Reminds us that this band when the Paramounts were professional before we knew of the Beatles. Today Gary Brooker, alone or as PROCOL HARUM still going stronger and better today than any of the bands from the same period . This book let's you know why and you may not realize their very healthy success & standing even today in 2013 and this book published in 1999 -- even stronger now- great.
