Croeso i Ogledd Cymru. Croeso i Wrecsam! Welcome to North Wales. Welcome to Wrexham!

These are the proceedings of the first International Conference on Internet Technologies and Applications (ITA 05), hosted by the Centre for Applied Internet Research (CAIR) at the University of Wales, North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI), Wrexham, North Wales, UK from Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th September 2005. The conference has been sponsored by the British Computer Society (BCS), the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and Total Network Solutions (TNS). We thank them all for their support.

The original Call for Papers was issued in September 2004. Approximately 150 papers were received and reviewed from February to April 2005 with a few more being considered as special cases after the initial deadline. These papers spanned the following fields of Internet Technologies and Applications: Accessibility and usability, Adaptive systems, Agents, AI/Expert systems, Collaborative decision-making, Data-mining, Distributed systems, e-Business/e-Commerce, e-Learning/e-Society, EDI, Ethical, social & legal issues, Formats, Groupware, HCI, Hypermedia, Integration, Internet applications, Internet languages, Internet technologies, Measurement, Multimedia, Music & audio, Network algorithms, Network architectures, Network management, Network optimisation, Network performance, Payment systems, Portals, Protocols & standards, Security, Semantics, Services, Storage, Systems failure, Traffic, Ubiquitous computing, User interfaces, Visualisation, Virtual applications, Web hardware, Web software, Wireless networks and XML.

Papers were received from over 40 countries in all continents. Following a rigorous review process, approximately 65 appear in these printed proceedings as full papers. A further 20 were accepted as posters and appear on the CD that accompanies these printed proceedings. It is appropriate, at this point, to offer our sincerest thanks to our International Programme Committee. Their professionalism and commitment have played an extremely large part in ensuring the success of the conference and we are very grateful to all involved. Of course, we also thank all of the contributing authors and presenters for helping us to build such a varied and interesting programme.

We are also very grateful to our two distinguished keynote speakers, Dr. Steven Furnell, Network Research Group, University of Plymouth and Professor Margaret Ross, Southampton Institute. It is an honour to have them here with us. They speak on topics of great interest and concern in the Internet world today. We thank them sincerely for their involvement. We are also very grateful to Professor Paul Reynolds, Orange/France Telecom Research Labs. for his support of the conference.

Also, we say a big ‘thank you’ to all the NEWI Estates staff for all their help before and during the conference.

Approximately 100 people have registered to attend the conference in Wrexham. We thank, at this point, the members of the Local Organising Committee, whose hard work has hopefully made the conference run as smoothly as could be expected. This all combines to form an exciting and valuable conference. Add on an interesting social programme and we hope that everyone leaves here inspired and fulfilled and we hope to see as many as possible in two years’ time at ITA 07.

Best wishes for an excellent conference. Pob hwyl - Iechyd da!
