4.0 out of 5 stars international law from a different perspective, 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
apparently, this book is not meant to provide an introduction to international law. it requires already some knowledge in that field since it offers an unsual, unorthodox view on common problems of international law. any reader who already worked through a basic textbook will find Higgins book invaluable to look at pulic international law from a complete different point of view. even if he does not agree with Higgins, he will find that it helps him to get an "overall" view of international law.

1.0 out of 5 stars I've finally woken up!, 11 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I was unlucky enough to have this book on my recommended reading list. At first glance it appears pretty, slim and lightweight... do not be fooled! Higgins is so long-winded and her sentences so complex that often you can be left with the exact opposite impression to the one she intended. There are some interesting points made but I would recommend only using it in addition to a traditional core textbook... otherwise you may end up in knots! Whole passages can require multiple re-readings in order for them to make any sense. The whole thing had a soporific effect. Sorry Ros...maybe you should put in some headings, bullet points...even the odd full stop on a page would be refreshing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Do not use this as a normal textbook - and you'll enjoy it!, 28 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Before you buy judge Higgins' excellent overview on IL (& you should!), be aware that this is not meant to be a college textbook! Higgins gives a very informed and very personal view, which will give you the big picture, but does not provide you w/ the kind of bullet-point detail you need for your exams.
Still, i have yet to read a more thought-provoking summary of where we are in IL today!

1.0 out of 5 stars boring , long winded, verbose
This text is a pointless foray into the venue of international law. The long winded sentences are filled with self adulation and lackinging in valuable information
