Product Description

Product Description

This book gives advice on how to respond to 50 different types of behaviour which can make people's lives sheer misery. The problems are listed alphabetically from the abdicator to the worrier and include the bureaucratic, the flippant, the kowtower, the manipulator, the sarcastic, the vague. For each problem type the author offers four alternative responses: do nothing; alter our perceptions; turn to advantage a problem personality; change the situation. The stimulating techniques he sets out can help everyone to cope with difficult colleagues, subordinates or superiors.

Problem People is a good guide into dealing with different types of characters that you may encounter either in the workplace, or in other social situations. After you have read it you will be able to put names to the characters outlined in the book! It works well as one of those books that you go back to occasionally, but I don't think you could read it as an actual book, more a topic at a time. One down side is that the format of resolving the poblems is very formulaic for each character i.e. what is the worst case/best case scenario if you either ignore/tackle the problems. It's a good guide for line managers to consult, but I wouldn't recommend it as a back up to any personnel/human resources/social psychology courses-there are some better guides out there.

Excellent book. It is easy to read, no management jargon. Peter Honey gives straightforward, simple solutions to help deal with most types of problem people. This is also useful for everyday life, not just for work situations.

This book was recommended to me about 10 years ago - and it's the only text book on management I find I use. I do have plenty of management experience, but for those "I have got NO IDEA HOW TO DEAL WITH YOU" exasperation moments, it's ideal - for each character type, you get 4 options, which will either suggest an approach to try that you hadn't thought of, or will start you thinking creatively about alternative ways of getting to the result you want. Very easy to pick up and dip into as and when needed.
