Product Description

Product Description

The material in this book is philosophically (as opposed to theologically or religiously) oriented, stressing the problem of God as a logical and philosophical problem. The perspective is critically analytic in the Naturalistic-Humanistic tradition. The basic approach is an issues or problems approach, but this is set in a historical context with quotations from Greek philosophy, the Church Fathers, the Medieval period, and from modern philosophers. The aim is to enable students to see what is being said and has been said about God and thereby fits this into a better framework in the light of present knowledge and society. It is hoped that students will develop an awareness and appreciation of the philosophical problems in the concept of God, that they will acquire the ability to engage in intelligent evaluation and exchange of ideas, and that they will display these qualities in their everyday thought. This volume is by no means exhaustive of all the themes in the Philosophy of Religion. The most fundamental ones about God's existence are covered thoroughly. This book is a starting point for more intensive work in the subject. It lays down the basic groundwork for an easy transition to other topics and to more sophisticated thought-patterns. The writing has been kept as concise and elementary as possible with short sections on a variety of topics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Problems with the concept of god, 13 Dec 2000
By
Danny Boy "1 Thess. 5:21" (Quezon City, Philippines) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Problem of God: A Short Introduction (Paperback)
Anyone mildly interested in the philosophy of religion will tell you that religious language is full of ambiguous terms and concepts(faith, omniscient, etc.). The most troubling term of all is GOD. Traditional theism attributes to god several traits and acts yet upon closer examination, they seem to be quite hard to understand. This book presents the problems forcefully by examining the classical proof of god's existence. The arguments presented include St. Anselm's ontological argument and St. Thomas Aquinas' five ways. Lastly, the book tackles the mainstay of any atheological book, the problem of evil (though he does not delve too deeply into it). As with Poidevin's book(Arguing for Atheism), The Problem of God is written as a textbook and is easy to read. A great book to start one's examination of god.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, to say the least..., 16 Sep 2000
By Timothy Bootsveld - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Problem of God: A Short Introduction (Paperback)
Debate of the existance of God, the purpose of life, science, philosophy and mysticism are all covered in this testament to athiest ideals. Comparable to to book 'Critiques of God'. Very controversial, post modern ideas are presented without, in my opinion, proper investigation. However, you wouldn't read this book to enhance your thinking, or to find backup for the God/Science debate. More of a 'think about life' book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A simple but effective tome, 3 Aug 2003
By Danny Boy "1 Thess. 5:21" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Problem of God: A Short Introduction (Paperback)
Meant as a textbook, this book provides an entry-level discourse on the problems of the concept of god. Concentrating on the classical arguments of Aquinas and Anselm, Mr. Angeles points out weaknesses and logical holes in their works. The problem with this book is that it refutes the classical arguments for theism without engaging in more recent, and more sophisticated, apologetics. It is good as a primer, but better move on to Michael Martin and Theodore Drange to see how far Philosophy of Religion has advanced.
