Product Description

Microsoft's Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) provides the foundation for building applications and high-quality user experiences for the Windows operating system. It blends the application user interface, documents, and media content, while exploiting the full power of your computer's operating system.

Its functionality extends to the support for Tablet PCs and other forms of input device, and it provides a more modern imaging and printing pipeline, accessibility and UI automation infrastructure, data-driven UIs and visualization, and integration points for weaving the application experience into the Windows shell.

This book shows you how WPF really works. It provides you with the no-nonsense, practical advice that you need in order to build high-quality WPF applications quickly and easily. After giving you a firm foundation, it goes on to explore the more advance aspects of WPF and how they relate to the others elements of the .NET 4.0 platform and associated technologies such as Silverlight.

What you'll learn

 • WPF basics: XAML, layout, control essentials, and data flow
 • WPF applications: Navigation, commands, localization, and deployment
 • Advanced controls: Custom controls, menus, toolbars, and trees
 • WPF documents: Text layout, printing, and document packaging
 • Graphics and multimedia: Drawing shapes, sound and video, animation, geometric transformations, and imaging

Who is this book for?

This book is designed for developers encountering WPF for the first time in their professional lives. A working knowledge of C# and the basic architecture of .NET is helpful to follow the examples easily, but all concepts will be explained from the ground up.

Excellent 2 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Excellent book. Matthew MacDonald explains things clearly and in depth. Most importantly it's packed with sample applications that you can run yourself, see working, and tinker with to confirm or correct your understanding of what's going on.

Good, solid choice 12 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I've only got through a few chapters of this book on Kindle so far, but my impression thus far is positive. I had real trouble grasping WPF no matter how many times I tried, but this book has a thorough and patient style that is now bringing me up to speed. A few observations:
- The author frequently describes a feature, then interjects with a paragraph in the form of "It'd be really good if you could make it do this - but, you can't. Sorry." which can kill the enthusiasm for the chapter, only then following up with "And here's a better method to do it.". I find this style odd, but acceptable, and it doesn't impact on the usefulness of the book as long as you're patient.
- In the fashion described above the author injects quite a few helpful tricks that account for the limitations in the framework you'll inevitably encounter. A less comprehensive book would merely leave you hanging and allow you to believe that what you want to do isn't possible.
- I acknowledge that I was warned about this, but the illustrations leave a bit to be desired in the standard Kindle format. As is mentioned, it is optimised for large-format i.e. Kindle DX and PC screen. They are still readable, but the quality has suffered somewhat.

This is probably one of the best books on the subject, mainly because of a highly practical approach. The author clearly not only knows the subject very, he also knows how to apply it in real life which I found invaluable. If you are looking for a thorough WPF reference, look no further.

Popular Highlights

WPF always follows the same sequence: first it sets the Name property (if set), then it attaches any event handlers, and lastly it sets the properties. This means that any event handlers that respond to property changes will fire when the property is set for the first time. "e;

To enable automatic window sizing, remove the Height and Width properties and set the Window.SizeToContent property to WidthAndHeight. "e;

Dependency properties use more efficient storage and support additional features such as change notification and property value inheritance (the ability to propagate default values down the element tree). Dependency properties are also the basis for a number of key WPF features, including animation, data binding, and styles. "e;
