Best book on Performance Management with PerformancePoint 2007 7 Oct 2008
By Intel Spec - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have been in the BI space for almost a decade and was glad to see that Microsoft finally entered this space full force with PerformancePoint 2007. The problem was there were no definitive books on the topic. There were "manuals" with click here instructions and dialogue box explanations but nothing that pulled it all together. This book does an excellent job of explaining how to create a complete BI solution with PerformancePoint 2007 and the other SQL Server BI components. It is more heavily focused on the Monitoring parts of the product (scorecards, dashboards, reports, etc) but it does a good job touching on the planning(forecasting, budgetin, and planning) capabilities. This is the book I recommend to a client to get up to speed on the Microsoft approach to Performance Management on the Microsoft stack.

No working source code... 14 Sep 2009
By B. Dooley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book as I have started to use PerformancePoint 2007 and needed something that would provide an in-depth view of PerformancePoint 2007 and ProClarity. The book itself has 14 chapters and only chapters 9 through 14 go into PerformancePoint and ProClarity. The first 8 chapters of the book are basically an introduction into all aspects of Microsoft BI to include SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, SharePoint and Excel. While this information was useful the majority of the book is not PerformancePoint as the title would suggest.

The biggest issue I have with this book is the lack of working Source code to go through examples in the book. The frustrating part is that both the Author and the Publisher have been aware of the issue since at least November 2008 and it still has not been resolved. I found a thread on the MSDN forums titled "Unable to to restore Backup, with error message 3241" from November 2008 talking about this issue, I just wish I would have found out prior to paying for the book.

I have contacted the publisher several times and they say they are working with the author the resolve the issue but it has been several weeks. The publisher seems to want to get this issue fixed and they have responded to me in a timely manner. The Author, Philo Janus, who provides an email to contact him in the book, has not been responsive.

Excellent organization and thorough overview 28 Mar 2009
By Ira Fuchs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to understand Microsoft's BI assets. Janus does a very good job of reviewing the capabilities of SQL Analysis Services, Excel and PerformancePoint and describing their complementary roles and functions in providing an end-to-end analytical suite of tools. Well written and organized.
