Product Description

Product Description

This new edition of Pro C# 5.0 and the .NET 4.5 Platform has been completely revised and rewritten to reflect the latest changes to the C# language specification and new advances in the .NET Framework. You'll find new chapters covering all the important new features that make .NET 4.5 the most comprehensive release yet, including:

  • .NET APIs for Windows 8 style UI apps
  • New asynchronous task-based model for async operations
  • How HTML5 support is being wrapped into C# web applications
  • New programming interfaces for HTTP applications, including improved IPv6 support
  • Expanded WPF, WCF and WF libraries giving C# more power than ever before
This comes on top of award winning coverage of core C# features, both old and new, that have made the previous editions of this book so popular (you'll find everything from generics to pLINQ covered here).

The mission of this text is to provide you with a rock-solid foundation in the C# programming language and the core aspects of the .NET platform (assemblies, remoting, Windows Forms, Web Forms, ADO.NET, XML web services, etc.). Once you digest the information presented in these 25 chapters, you’ll be in a perfect position to apply this knowledge to your specific programming assignments, and you’ll be well equipped to explore the .NET universe on your own terms.

What you’ll learn

  • Be the first to understand the .NET 4.5 platform and Visual C# 2012.
  • Discover the ins and outs of the leading .NET technology.
  • Learn from an award-winning author who has been teaching the .NET world since version 1.0.
  • Find complete coverage of XAML, .NET 4.5 and Visual Studio 12 together with discussion of the new Windows Runtime.

Who this book is for

If you’re checking out this book for the first time, do understand that it's targeted at experienced software professionals or graduate students of computer science (so don't expect three chapters on iteration or decision constructs!).

It is perfect for anyone who is interested in the new .NET Framework 4.5 and the C# language. Whether you are moving to .NET for the first time or are already writing applications using previous .NET versions, this book will provide you with a comprehensive grounding in the new technology and serve as a complete reference throughout your coding career.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 5 Dec 2012
By Don
It's been some time since I read a book as well written and complete as this. Andrew Troelsen has a knack of teaching something comprehensively without sounding too pedantic. I'd say this is a must read for any self respecting C# developer. Whether you're new to C# or experienced, there's something for everyone in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not an introductory book 9 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am reviewing the Kindle version. As a Kindle book it suffers from some formatting issues with the tables and diagrams. They are very small on the Kindle screen making it difficult to see. I have to review these on the PC (Kindle app) to read. That is the reason for 4 stars and not 5
The book itself is very good, starts off with an overview of where C# fits in .NET and then proceeds to cover the elements of C# as a language and how the language elements fit into .NET. The style of writing keeps you interested
The following sections then cover .NET in greater detail and how the individual classes can be used.
The book is a very technical book and does not spend time on how to write loops or the benefits of object orientation. Instead it is a book on how to use the C# language in the .NET environment (which can include other operating systems)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written even for C# juniors like me 2 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Coming from Microsoft SQL 2012 books, where examples in the first chapters included complex code from say 10 chapters later and you couldn't understand anything, I find this book very very well written. It has a very relaxed tone, with small jokes, well constructed examples and of course very interesting contents.
You can even download the exercises as Visual Studio solutions, from Apress website. Very cool!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 20 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I needed a book to bring be up-to date with the latest version of .net and c#, this did the trick. The concepts are explained really clearly and surprisingly it had zero errors!

The code in the book can be typed directly into your .net compiler or downloaded from the Apress site. The author uses Microsoft's compiler, he does discuss others at the start of the book. For those that are using visual express, there are some functions like the class designer that is not shipped with the free edition so you won't be able to practice that functionality but it's really not a issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth its price 10 Nov 2013
By sergey
I enjoyed reading this book. The coverage of C# language is quite in-depth. In addition, excellent introduction to topics like WPF, ASP.NET, WCF. The theory is mixed with many hads-on examples. Quality of text is great, haven't seen any typos or line of code that gave error. Recommend it to anyone who has some knowledge of C# and Visual Studio and wants to get up to date with current technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and up-to-date book 7 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Eventhough the book is fairly thick, it is still easy to read through. It will start with explaining the basics, even covering cases where you don't have Visual Studio or Windows to work with. It also works very well as a reference during my daily coding practises.
