Product Description

Product Description

Pro Expression Blend 4 is for .NET developers and graphical artists who want to learn the ins and outs of the Expression Blend integrated development environment. You may know already that this tool can be used to build Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Silverlight, and Windows Phone 7 applications; however, this book will take you well beyond the basics and provide you with a detailed examination of key Blend topics, including workspace customization, graphics, layout, styles, themes, data binding, and the use of SketchFlow, giving you an excellent understanding of the Blend product and what it can do for you. Over the course of these eight chapters, you will learn numerous techniques to simplify the authoring of XAML using Blend. These include:

  • Transforming a vector graphic into a custom control template with a few clicks of the mouse
  • Generating complex animations using an integrated timeline editor
  • Visually designing interactive data templates
  • Creating prototypes (via SketchFlow) that can be transformed into production-level code

Throughout Pro Expression Blend 4, you’ll work with both Blend and .NET code to finalize fully-functional projects that will provide both valuable insights and a sound foundation for your future WPF and Silverlight projects. Each chapter will give you ample opportunity to build .NET software using Blend. However, this is not a programming book, per se. While some examples will require a manageable amount of C# code, this book is squarely focused on helping you gain mastery over the numerous tools, editors, designers, and wizards of the Microsoft Expression Blend IDE.

What you’ll learn

  • Transforming a vector graphic into a custom control template with a few clicks of the mouse
  • Generating complex animations using an integrated timeline editor
  • Visually designing interactive data templates
  • Creating prototypes (via SketchFlow) that can be transformed into production-level code

I chose this book to assist me with getting up to speed with Blend as a visual design tool for our development work.. Having been a Windows Forms developer using Visual Studio for many years, I have the need to develop some applications using WPF and Silverlight, as well as for Windows Phone 7, and therefore have chosen to utilise Blend. This book was a great guide in introducing Blend as the tool for the job.

This book does not teach you XAML, nor is that its purpose, it just concentrates on Blend as an application, running through its many functions and options. It does this well, going through the interface stage by stage, this allows the book to be used as a quick reference in future if you need to concentrate on a specific area. The whole book is printed in colour which is a very nice touch, not only does it make the pictures/screen shots much clearer to understand (and this book has a lot of pictures which is great), but it makes the examples much more legible.

For me, as an existing developer who needed to get an introduction to Blend and make good use of it, this book was ideal and I would recommend it.

Not in a Pro League 1 Jan 2012

This is a good introductory book on Expression Blend 4 but nothing particularly advanced as the title suggests. It covers Blend 4, and covers it well for learning the tool from basics. It also has a chapter on Windows Phone 7 (WP7) dealing with design issues particular to WP7 which is a good intro for someone leaning toward WP7 designs.

I expected deeper coverage on creating custom resources but this book doesn't go into much detail in this area. Saying that, it provides a nice flow of the subject at hand with good structure and clarity. Except for the WP7 chapter, when it comes to Blend 4, Microsoft Expression Blend 4 Step By Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) will still remain my preferred choice, but only slightly so.

Not the best, but very good.

Not very Pro 3 Oct 2011

Do not be misled by the word "Pro" in the title, this book is very beginner in fact.

The instructions in the tutorials are hidden in paragraphs, making it difficult to quickly move through tutorials.
