Manufacturer's Description

Key to PES 2008 is a proprietary adaptive AI system entitled Teamvision. Unique to the Konami game, Teamvision is a sophisticated AI programming that learns and adapts according to an individual’s style of play. As such, it will learn new ways to build attacks and to counter specific movements and previous attacking or defensive errors, ensuring games are more in line with the tactical but flowing nature of the real thing.

With the Pro Evolution Soccer series renowned for its fluid, realistic gameplay, the new game builds on the implementation of Teamvision with additional key advances. As with previous releases since its inception in 1996, the ball is again treated as a separate entity, with the timing of shots entirely down to the player, while the new AI ensures that defenders work to close down space and block efforts on goal. Similarly, distribution of passes works along the same lines, with players using the space available to them to switch the ball. Close control has also been enhanced with more control when dribbling the ball, and a number of subtle moves added to bypass defenders and move the ball into space.

Working in conjunction with the Teamvision system, every aspect of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’s on-field play has been reworked and fine-tuned to create the balanced and strategic play of a high stakes match. Set-pieces have been improved, with full control given over the number of players and the position of the defensive wall. A wider range of set piece options are also available to make use of specific talents within the team.

The thrill is gone 27 Oct 2007
Fun:
PES6 was a poor port from the PS2 version. PES 2008 is a port of the Xbox 360 version. The gameplay is noticeably different. For a start, the games are much faster. The ball physics are very different, with the ball behaving like rubber, bouncing and slithering all over the place. This is not the considered game that PES6 was. It plays more like an arcade game. It lacks the depth of previous PES editions.

I'm playing on a 1.7Gh Centrino laptop, 1 Gb ram. I play at lowest quality because it runs smoother, without frameskip.

Even at high quality the graphics are quite disappointing. The players shuffle upfield like demented shrimps. The ball seems to slide rather than roll. The grass on the stadiums is awful on the eyes. Hopefully some decent option files will be released soon.

The music is truely awful, and the commentary stinks, as usual. Sorry, it's the truth.

The strikers are all too powerful, and shooting and scoring is much easier. I was soon nettingg some spectacular volleys at pro level, but there was little satisfaction because it felt TOO easy. I felt almost... helped...

The CPU is obviously in control of the ebb -and -flow of matches, not you or your skill. The AI, although showing some improvement, has too many inconsistencies that ruin flow. Don't expect quick centre support if you're dashing up the wing!

There are many annoying little bugs and ommissions. It is a sloppy, rushed release and really feels like it.

Despite the many gripes, the game is still very playable, but, dare I say it, I think after two days I'm already bored of it. Too predictable. The core brilliance of PES is there, but it is hampered by a poor implementation.

I'll definitely try out the online once the servers are active, but I fully expect manic goalfests, not the beautiful game.

Back to PES6 which, despite it's flaws, is still the best football game of all time. Just my opinion.

If you've got a decent PC, and don't have the cash yet for a PS3 or an X-Box360 then the PC version of Pro Evolution 2008 will do very nicely. Unlike with the PS2 version, the game has been overhauled to make things such as taking it round players far more realistic and in general the game just plays really, really well.

Pro Evolution 2008 improves upon the classic series, and remains the choice for true football fans. If you like shiny graphics, "roster swaps" (whatever they are) and presentation over football, or you're just a casual fan, FIFA is for you. If you want the proper football experience, and don't mind spending 2 precious seconds changing "Man Red" to "Manchester United" then this is the game for you.

Aside from a failure to get key English clubs licensed, all the real player names are there for the clubs so even for you Premiership fans out there its fine. Everybody knows an update patch is so easy to come across these days anyway. Other than that you've got Serie A, Ligue 1, La Liga etc along with a welcome batch including some new Swedish, Polish and Russian sides to make this game the best football game out.

Fun:
First of all, I started by playing PES4 and bought PES games every year without a question. Now with this garbage named PES 2008, we get a beta game not a full release especially the awkward online mode.

PES 2008 online is horrendous, I buy this game every year just to play online, its much more fun to play against a human opponent not AI. Well, my experience was horrible. Firstly, LAG, almost every matches has lag spikes that often result in conceding silly goals, sometimes the ball disappears then reappears on the other side of the pitch then bam, congratulations, you just have conceded a goal due to Konami's stupid online coding. In other cases, I succeed in tackling the ball from a striker and run with the ball for a second, then all of a sudden, I find him with the ball in front of my goalkeeper and bam, another goal conceded!!

Konami does nothing to stop lag, not to mention cheaters. The top of the ladder is a cheater and his name is Duix or something like that, I played him before, and all he does is kick off, massiiiiiiiivvvvvve lagggg BAAMM goaaal, rinse and repeat.

Believe me, you will keep cursing in front of your computer if you play online and try to climb the ladder in a fair way. Another thing not related to lag but poor coding of the game and goalkeepers who look like idiots. some players online play corners in a way that ALWAYS result in the goalkeeper putting the ball into his own net, BAAMMM another silly goal to elevate your blood pressure and make you curse even more. Add to this goalkeepers who can't parry the ball away but fall on their arses and let the ball go in.

Another frustration is playing against opponents playing INTER MILAN, Man United and sometimes Barcelona or Brazil. Here is the scienario, Kick off, pass to Ronaldinho, Ibrahimovic or C. Ronaldo for example and let the wonder goals begin, player dribbling from the half way line and get past everyone else like a speedy train and then BAMMM another sucky goal that will make you hate your life.

IN online mode, there is no 2 vs 2, no 3 v3, no tournaments, nothing more than playing ranking matches for the top of ladder or friendlies. The previous version had more than that, KONAMI?are you improving your game or going backwards?

In conclusion, I stopped playing online, its pointless and waste of time. I will never buy PES game again before reading enough customer reviews and make sure that the online mode is working as intended and that I am getting a complete product that improves over its predecessors.
