We bought this socket tester to use while caravaning in France, where often reverse polarity is found.
We are very happy with it and the price was good.

This is a very convenient, very easy to use, and very portable device that will let you check all your mains connections in no time and thus avoid potentially dangerous situations! There are other models which can diagnose a few more faults but unlike some other bigger models this unit will fit in easily on multi plugs since it occupies very little space. Its therefore also very useful to carry with you and use to check electrical connections at different venues where you need a good fault free connection (especially when connecting sensitive equipment).

This is very good for testing the electric hook-up on mainly continental camp-sites. It tells you if there is an earth or not, or if the circuit has reversed polarity. I leave it plugged into a socket when I connect to the mains and it immediately gives the information.

Seems to be fine for the job and works well here in the UK both on my home supply and - the reason I bought it - on my motorhome supply when hooked up. Taking it to France in September so will update this review after that.

Updated after use. Toured France for a while last month and found this very useful indeed. I remembered to plug it in on all but one site we visited so at least we were aware of what sort of supply there was to the 'van. Based on this I have now bought a reverse polarity hookup so on the next trip I'll use this plug to check the connection type and then use the reversed lead where it is needed. Electrically speaking it is better to be safe than sorry.

Used to check polarity on French sites, works fine so I could select the right adaptor and feel (a bit) safer

Not sure how much of a problem this really is, and of course the gadget could be lying through its electronic teeth but hey ho.

If a socket is wired incorrectly it could kill you depending how it is wired up, this will last you a lifetime and can be handed down to the kids when they get there own place.

Sounds like i own shares in this doesnt it lol

I dont i just love this amazing simple little item that is " Dead "simple to use,pun intended. This could save somones life.

Just plug it into a live socket, switch it on unless the socket is on already

There is 3 lights you need to check.

Details of what is wrong is on the little plug so no need to look up a detailed 20 page instruction booklet.

Then fix it or get somone to fix it and then check it again after to check, do this before they leave and in front of them as the cables maybe have been installed wrongly from the Fuse or junction box.

I have a good knowledge of eletrical sockets etc so i was able to change the cables over after i pulled the fuse and made sure it was locked before starting work, or do it when you are alone if you cant lock the box. My box is on the ground so we have a lockable cupboard.

Sockets are much higher voltage than light switches so if not trained higher a professional.

Plug this in to a standard 13A UK socket and you would expect the three confirmation lights to come on. Live to the correct pin, neutral to the correct pin, earth connected. Safe to use.

It's when one of the lights does NOT come on that you need to be cautious and wonder what the socket you are plugging into has for wiring behind it.

I've experienced sockets with the LIVE / NEUTRAL reversed and with NO EARTH (potentially lethal error). Well this little unit will tell you immediately if there is a problem with a socket you have wired yourself or have inherited in your house from others who may not have known what they were doing.

Additionally, use it abroad with your UK adapter plug to ensure you and your family are still safe (we know that some countries are less stringent about wiring than us in the UK).

An inexpensive, simple checker that could easily save your life - no excuse for not having one. A permanent resident in my toolbox (and suitcase).

We bought this for a specific purpose - a no-frills, inexpensive gadget for checking polarity on French Camp sites of the individual electricity supply on caravan pitches.
By simply connecting the caravan to the camp electricity supply and plugging this devise into one of the sockets inside our caravan, we were able to check the polarity very easily, by the number of LED's which illuminated, and when necessary, use a separate adapter at the supply source to ensure the electricity was the correct polarity to the caravan, so ensuring all the equipment on board functioned.
An absolute essential when caravanning in France....
