'Kirsten Caine is an uncompromising deviant', and this is an uncompromising book. You probably haven't seen a Black Lace book dedicated to Coil's Jhonn Balance before, you probably haven't seen one that explores the psyches of its viewpoint characters, here eccentric dominatrix Kirsten Caine and government flunky Simon Charlesworth, with such exquisite attention to detail, and you certainly haven't seen one displaying such a wonderfully mordant wit. Ostensibly the account of an extra-marital affair - albeit one whose consumation is unusual, to say the least - Martel's book takes this hoary theme about as far from aspirational chick lit as it's possible to go, while finding time between the deviant sex scenes to fry some bigger fish, from the con of London life (in an extraordinary sequence) to the havoc wrought by New Labour policy. This could come across as dry polemic and it's testament to Martel's skill that it's anything but, veering closer in its delicious observations to Jonathan Coe's comedies of manners than anything else in genre erotica, making this required reading for anyone wanting a little bit more from their smut. And as for rumours that this book is based on an actual affair with a cabinet minister, well ...

I bought this book because I've been disappointed with dominatrix memoirs in the past and this story looked more promising than most femdom fiction. Ms Martell is a very talented writer and obviously highly intelligent and well educated. The story is certainly compelling, but I did occasionally find Ms Martell's character Kirsten rather tiresome. The writing is often highly self-indulgent and Ms Martell seems just a little too impressed with herself at times. That's not inconsistent with the narrator's character, but it does get a bit old.

However, she does have a knack for describing her Cabinet Minister's discomfiture with the sadistic glee only such women are capable of. I especially enjoyed the scenes of humiliation and erotic torment at the country house. If this is truly based on an actual affair... well, I can't say I entirely envy the man, but I wouldn't mind having friends like Kirsten Caine.
