Product Description

The nation is stunned silent when presidential hopeful James Kilcannon is shot dead point blank, while sharing the stage at a benefit concert with his rock star girlfriend Stacy Tarrant. Fiercely independent attorney Tony Lord defends the assassin in a sensational trial that erupts in to the media event of the decade. But the most shocking gambit ever witnessed in the history of television has yet to unfold. As America watches, a mysterious and ruthless figure known only as Phoenix takes to the airwaves in the ultimate act of high-tech terror. Holding the wife of a wealthy newspaper mogul and Stacy's manager hostage, Phoenix mounts a televised trial of his own - in which Stacy Tarrant and Tony Lord are the helpless defendants, millions of viewers are jurors, and - unless his chilling demands are met - Phoenix is the unstoppable executioner. . .

To begin with I found this book a little confusing. Maybe that's because I had already met some of the characters in later books. However as the story progressed I became enthralled. Especially after Carson's trial. That's when the real fun began. The charaacters were excellent and the plot intriguing. I enjoyed the many twists and turns. As always with RNP the fun for me was trying to predict what would happen next. And even more satisfying for me - I was often right.

I couldn't put this book down. I had taken it on holiday and my husband was not amused. I didn't speak to him for 3 days.

Forgettable 12 Oct 2003
Format:Paperback
It must be about a month ago I read the book, but as I started writing this, I really had to think what this book was about. I remember reading it, it was a thriller, but I had to concentrate to remember the story. Does that say a lot? I have never read anything else by him, but I think he's one of those bestseller authors who produce a million seller every year and earns big bucks through that, therefore doesn't have to put too much effort into his stories.

But this isn't a bad book, as thrillers go. Unfortunately it had to start with the killing of a presidential hopeful, so you immediately know the story is American, where else do politicians get killed so often or where else do idiots have access to weapons that easily? But the story gets better after that with a kidnapper, who has his own broadcasting equipment and sends out reports at given times, therefore completely controlling the whole story. Interesting to read, though a fairly predictable end. Nice for a long flight or a lazy afternoon at the beach, no brain needed.

What started out as an intriguing story was spoilt by overwriting to the point of tedium. A shame, because I have enjoyed Richard North Patterson's earlier novels. Maybe his publishers wanted a high word count but substitute novel for letter in George Bernard Shaw comment "It's always easier to write a long letter than a short letter" and you'll get the picture!
