Karl Wallinger, half of the original Waterboys line up had decided to go solo and produce this excellent, and overlooked album, full of eco-warrier lyrics, a great cover of Dylan's "All I Want To Do" and Sinead O'Connor on backing vocals to "Hawaiian Island Girl". However, the highlight of an album full of highlights is the fantastic "Ship of Fools" (which is not a dodgy cover of the Erasure track by the same name). A cross between traditional AOR, Irish Folk Music (a la
Fisherman's Blues (2006 Digital Remaster)) and great guitar based pop ("Ship of Fools").
Wallinger had taken a risk by stepping out "solo"; if only all solo efforts resulted in rewards like this.
The sound on this great album was to evolve and improve for his next offering
Goodbye Jumbo which reached even greater heights, adding influences as diverse as the Beatles and Motown into the mix along with even further eco-warrier messages, which are probably as relevant today as at the time of (original) release.
I understand this album has been difficult to get for some time now, and this re-release is most welcome, and should be included in any collection of people with a serious interest in music.
