Karl Wallinger, half of the original Waterboys line up had decided to go solo and produce this excellent, and overlooked album, full of eco-warrier lyrics, a great cover of Dylan's "All I Want To Do" and Sinead O'Connor on backing vocals to "Hawaiian Island Girl". However, the highlight of an album full of highlights is the fantastic "Ship of Fools" (which is not a dodgy cover of the Erasure track by the same name). A cross between traditional AOR, Irish Folk Music (a la Fisherman's Blues (2006 Digital Remaster)) and great guitar based pop ("Ship of Fools").

Wallinger had taken a risk by stepping out "solo"; if only all solo efforts resulted in rewards like this.

The sound on this great album was to evolve and improve for his next offering Goodbye Jumbo which reached even greater heights, adding influences as diverse as the Beatles and Motown into the mix along with even further eco-warrier messages, which are probably as relevant today as at the time of (original) release.

I understand this album has been difficult to get for some time now, and this re-release is most welcome, and should be included in any collection of people with a serious interest in music.

A great first album 12 Dec 2000

Like many artists, the first album is often fairly raw and Private Revolution is no exception. If there's one track that gets shouted for when they play live it's "Ship of Fools" which was a peek of the lyrical style we were to hear more of in Goodbye Jumbo, which for me is the best of their albums.

There's a couple of short stocking filler lamers on the album which is why I'd like to give the album 4.5 stars.

On the whole this album is very, very good. You should buy Goodbye Jumbo and Private Revolution at the same time and listen to them both as soon as you can. Then buy all the others (including the "World Party EP" and accompanying video if you can find them - very Beatles).

Karl's Early Years 10 Jan 2008

Little did we know in 1986 that this CD signalled the start of a rather special band built around ex-Waterboys keyboardist Karl Wallinger. This debut finds Wallinger finding his feet away from the Waterboys and, although some of the synth patches sound a bit dated (worst offender is the opening title track), there are strong songs here. "Ship of Fools" has been mentioned elsewhere, but "Ballad of the Little Man" and "Hawaiian Island World" are very decent too. "It Can Be Beautiful" finds him using the floaty falsetto that would return with devastating effect on "Goodbye Jumbo". All in all, a strong and interesting debut that hints at greatness to come.

In my usual whingeing way, what we need now is a CD re-issue that rounds up the lovely B-side "Holy Water" and other tracks dating from this period.
