Product Description

CD Description

Anthony Phillips, was a founder member of the British Rock band Genesis. Born in London, on December 1951, Anthony found himself at Charterhouse Public School by 1965. It was here that he met up with Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, forming the pre Genesis band, The Anon, which played three Rolling Stones songs at a concert. At this time there were two bands at Charterhouse, The Anon and The Garden Wall. In 1967 various factions of both bands joined forces and became one. During a school visit, former old boy Jonathan King, was given a tape recorded by the new band and liking what he heard, invited them to London for a meeting. Following a series of meetings, Jonathan King christened the band, Genesis and offered them a recording contract. At this time Genesis included Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips, Tony Banks and Chrissie Stewart. Chrissie Stewart would be replaced by John Silver, who in turn was replaced by John Mayhew. The band recorded two singles and the album From Genesis To Revelation , before leaving Decca and signing with Charisma, to record the Trespass album. Anthony recorded the albums From Genesis To Revelation and Trespass , whilst performing a great many gigs with the band, before deciding to leave, following a particularly bad bout of stage fright and debilitating bronchial pneumonia. It was between the years 1970 and the release of his debut album, The Geese And The Ghost , in 1977, that many fans lost sight of Anthony Phillips. In actual fact much of the material that would make up the Geese And The Ghost and also the later Tarka album, would be written during this time. Anthony also felt he needed to improve his arranging skills and musical education, so learned to sight-read music. He also continued to write and record with Mike Rutherford, making Silver Song , which included Phil Collins. Some of these early recordings and demos can be found on the album The Archive Collection Volume One . Material written at this time also made it into the acoustic series Private Parts And Pieces , which made double numbers and the music was to prove just as popular with Anthony s fan base as his commercial rock albums. It was around this period that Anthony s career took on a stop start feel, as the profile of Genesis became higher 'Wise After The Event and Sides followed The Geese And The Ghost , then into the eighties Anthony recorded the albums 1984 and the pop influenced Invisible Men , which at the time seemed to split his audience and yet attract others in equal amounts. Whist managing to release a staggering amount of commercial albums over the years, Anthony has also recorded music for films and television. The music of Anthony Phillips has a wonderfully rich textured feel to it and while it is expected to occasionally sound not unlike early Genesis material, it would be unfair to put him into one bag. Anthony s recording career takes in a great many styles from rock through to pop and from baroque to classical. Never staying too long in one place and yet having a style all of his own, Anthony s back catalogue is possibly one of the most diverse and yet artistically satisfying. Continuing the re issue programme, we present 2 original albums in this 2 cd set Fully re-mastered and annotated by ANTHONY PHILLIPS. DRAGON FLY DREAMS was originally released in 1996. SORIEE was originally released in 1999.
