Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Well,i think title of this album is a nice place to start this
review, because it clearly defines songs on this cd,and has double meaning.Unfortunately subtitle '29 Great Performances'
is simply untrue. How can 18 sec. of a song be a 'great performance'? And you get plenty of those uncomplete recordings.
What really sales this cd are complete and rare versions of famous folk songs like '500 miles' and 'Blowing in the wind'.
Or oddities like Beethovens 'Moonlight sonata' where Elvis plays piano backed up by wierd choir singing. You get some really great performances here, but not in great sound. You get some great singing, and mostly bad guitar/piano playing. Some songs are recorded in karaoke style, with Elvis singing to a instrumental lp,so i guess he was one of the first to do that too!Bottom line is that this album deserves 5 stars from collectors point of view, but i will give it 4 stars for bootleg sound and lack of booklet, but that's no news with FTD label.

I think the Follow That Dream label is pretty good..you get all sorts of goodies that arnt always available otherwise. The cases are pretty good too with unusual photos etc..there are about 8 in the series and will make a really good little collection in due course.
This CD features a bunch of stuff from 1959/60... If you havent heard this sort of thing before you may find it interesting however you might be better with a copy of The Home Recordings or The Complete Million Dollar Session. Whats good about this "informal" material is that its like having elvis and a few buddies banging away on a piano in the room next door. Anyway there are 29 tracks...its quite hardwork to listen to, not enjoyable really in parts. That said in addition to the 59/60 stuff there are 10 songs from 66..one, moonlight sonata, is really weird. Some of the tracks (Its a Sin to Tell a Lie, Fools Rush in ) are great. In short if you are an occasional Elvis fan dont get this..gets Thats The Way It Is special eddition (3 cds). If you are a big fan get it, if only for the '66 stuff or for yr collection, if you are an in betweeny, well its yr money...

Home Recordings Part 2 16 July 2003
By Johnny Heering - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD features Elvis and his pals singing at home, recorded on a home tape recorder. The sound quality is poor, but listenable. Accompaniment is generally limited to either piano or guitar. We get to hear Elvis and friends having fun singing and goofing around. These are not professional performances, but it is fun to hear for an Elvis fan. Many of these songs would have made great records if they had been professionally recorded (and some of them were). There are a few songs here that are different from the rest. "Fools Rush In" and "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" feature Elvis singing along to a schmaltzy instrumental "sing along at home" album that I can't identify. "Blowin' in the Wind" and "500 Miles" feature Elvis and friends singing along to Sing a Song With the Kingston Trio. I can't give an unqualified recommendation to this album, based on the poor sound quality. But Elvis fans with forgiving ears should enjoy this CD.
