5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Beach! 8 Aug 2011
By Sunglasses VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
First day on the beach in beautiful Tuscany armed with this book and from the very first chapter I was hooked. There were lots of intertwining plots to keep me from putting the book down for long. I warmed to the leading character, unlucky in love Anna, who buries herself into her media law career. The media law covered in this book helps you understand the darker side that can be encountered by high profile celebrities and the lengths that media lawyers have to go to keep their clients out of the papers!

Although Anna is central to the story, there are many other characters with a story of their own. I enjoyed how all the plots eventually came together for the inevitable happy ending, but I must say that you do keep guessing right until the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Private Lives - enjoyable blockbuster 30 Jun 2011
By JM TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I've never read Tasmina Perry before so am unable to compare this latest offering with her other highly acclaimed works, but will say that I found it an entertaining enjoyable read.
It's about a whole host of characters, some of which work for Donovan Pierce, a group of lawyers who specialise in protecting celebrities from the press. The latest recruit is Anna, who begins her work for the company by going all out to prevent a sensational exposure about Hollywood star Sam Charles. Unfortunately it all goes pear shaped and Anna is left to carry the can. But slowly she begins to realise that someone deliberately set out to sabotage her work, and that someone is closer than she thinks. This then takes her down the road of trying to discover why a young woman died and whether it was the accident everyone claims, or something more sinister.
It's chicklit with a little darkness thrown in, entertaining, easy reading that would be a great holiday read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 28 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've read most of Tasmina Perry's books and loved them all. I used to class them as a lightweight beach read but with each book they seem to be getting more complex and intelligent. I think Private Lives is her best yet - a real page-turner with a really great heroine Anna who you are always rooting for. The book is set in a media law firm (the author used to be a lawyer and I think it shows - that or it has been incredibly well researched). It feels very authentic and very juicy. I always wondered what went on behind those super injunction cases we read (or don't read about) in the papers. It's not quite a thriller, not quite a relationship drama - but I think that's why I liked it so much - it combines two of my favourite sort of books. I'm in two minds whether Anna ended up with the right man - but hopefully there might be a sequel to keep the Anna's love triangle going

4.0 out of 5 stars Private Lives 16 Aug 2011
By Mr. B. W. Haynes VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Private Lives is a whacking 678 pages long and should have taken me a lot longer to read. However I zipped through it as the plot and characterisation appealed to me and I found it an extremely satisying holiday read.
Feisty lawyer Anna Kennedy is given a clue as to why her just case with her new firm goes catastrophically wrong and she wont rest until she finds out how and why it happened.
There is a nice mix of film stars, politicians, media personalities and showbiz glitz to keep you engaged to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chick Lit + Murder Mystery = Great! 5 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover
A young lawyer at a firm specialising in taking out injunctions for celebrities in order to protect them from their own stupidity finds herself involved in the lives of some of her clients and in trying to uncover a murder conspiracy. On her way from initial failure to professional success she encounters film stars, politicians, the international party set and some people she'd rather not know, who could put her life in danger.

I'd never read any of Tasmina Perry's books prior to this one as the covers have always put me off and I didn't know if I wanted to spend any time with the largely over-privileged characters in her previous works. This being the case I was a bit dubious about reading this one and must say that the pink cover with its image of a woman on a yacht didn't help. Having now read the book, I feel that the cover is not representative of the contents of the book and doesn't in any way do it justice.

I really enjoyed `Private Lives' and was particularly impressed by the lead character, Anna, being a strong independent woman who works hard for a living and, unlike in many novels aimed at women, isn't just waiting for a man to come along and rescue her. There are other equally strong female characters, both good and bad. And though there is a romance strand to the book, it's not the main focus - this makes the novel seem more unusual than most Chick Lit. There a few fairly raunchy sex scenes, but nothing too over the top. As a reader of crime novels, I particularly enjoyed Anna's investigation of the death of a young "party girl", which focused as much on the impact on the victim's family as on the whodunit side of things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent chick-lit 19 Aug 2011
By Roman Clodia TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
No, that's not an oxymoron in my title: this manages to straddle the divide between trashy beach-read and something a little more grown-up very well.

For one, our heroine is not some dumb wannabe starlet or a ditzy, charming girl running a flower shop or doing another suitably `feminine' job which she can give up as soon as she finds a (rich) man... she's a tough, bright and driven lawyer, admittedly in the `glamorous' area of media law, and perfectly capable of supporting herself.

Our heroes, too, (this is an ensemble novel so there are, arguably, more than one) might be good-looking but they also have a moral centre usually noticeably lacking in this kind of book and choose to use it within the world of the novel.

Perry manages to keep various plot-strands bubbling very well and handles them with detail rather than simply skimming the surface. These lawyers don't just flit around London in taxis and designer suits, they stay up all night working on cases before going to court.

That said, the book also has a deliciously shallow side with Hollywood actresses, models, call girls, the paparazzi and private jets; and is fairly topical with various plots concerning super-injunctions and the quest of celebrities to keep their private lives out of the papers.

So this certainly won't be winning any literary prizes, but for a surprisingly intelligent read that is still glamorous and full of deliciously scandalous goings-on this is perfect.
