5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Beach! 8 Aug 2011
By Sunglasses VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
First day on the beach in beautiful Tuscany armed with this book and from the very first chapter I was hooked. There were lots of intertwining plots to keep me from putting the book down for long. I warmed to the leading character, unlucky in love Anna, who buries herself into her media law career. The media law covered in this book helps you understand the darker side that can be encountered by high profile celebrities and the lengths that media lawyers have to go to keep their clients out of the papers!

Although Anna is central to the story, there are many other characters with a story of their own. I enjoyed how all the plots eventually came together for the inevitable happy ending, but I must say that you do keep guessing right until the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Private Lives - enjoyable blockbuster 30 Jun 2011
By JM VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've never read Tasmina Perry before so am unable to compare this latest offering with her other highly acclaimed works, but will say that I found it an entertaining enjoyable read.
It's about a whole host of characters, some of which work for Donovan Pierce, a group of lawyers who specialise in protecting celebrities from the press. The latest recruit is Anna, who begins her work for the company by going all out to prevent a sensational exposure about Hollywood star Sam Charles. Unfortunately it all goes pear shaped and Anna is left to carry the can. But slowly she begins to realise that someone deliberately set out to sabotage her work, and that someone is closer than she thinks. This then takes her down the road of trying to discover why a young woman died and whether it was the accident everyone claims, or something more sinister.
It's chicklit with a little darkness thrown in, entertaining, easy reading that would be a great holiday read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent chick-lit 19 Aug 2011
By Roman Clodia TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
No, that's not an oxymoron in my title: this manages to straddle the divide between trashy beach-read and something a little more grown-up very well.

For one, our heroine is not some dumb wannabe starlet or a ditzy, charming girl running a flower shop or doing another suitably `feminine' job which she can give up as soon as she finds a (rich) man... she's a tough, bright and driven lawyer, admittedly in the `glamorous' area of media law, and perfectly capable of supporting herself.

Our heroes, too, (this is an ensemble novel so there are, arguably, more than one) might be good-looking but they also have a moral centre usually noticeably lacking in this kind of book and choose to use it within the world of the novel.

Perry manages to keep various plot-strands bubbling very well and handles them with detail rather than simply skimming the surface. These lawyers don't just flit around London in taxis and designer suits, they stay up all night working on cases before going to court.

That said, the book also has a deliciously shallow side with Hollywood actresses, models, call girls, the paparazzi and private jets; and is fairly topical with various plots concerning super-injunctions and the quest of celebrities to keep their private lives out of the papers.

So this certainly won't be winning any literary prizes, but for a surprisingly intelligent read that is still glamorous and full of deliciously scandalous goings-on this is perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Private Lives 16 Aug 2011
By Mr. B. W. Haynes VINE VOICE

Private Lives is a whacking 678 pages long and should have taken me a lot longer to read. However I zipped through it as the plot and characterisation appealed to me and I found it an extremely satisying holiday read.
Feisty lawyer Anna Kennedy is given a clue as to why her just case with her new firm goes catastrophically wrong and she wont rest until she finds out how and why it happened.
There is a nice mix of film stars, politicians, media personalities and showbiz glitz to keep you engaged to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars A CRACKING HOLIDAY READ 11 July 2011
By Mrs. C. Swarfield TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is the first Tasmina Perry novel that l have read and l really expected to be bored rigid with it as it is not my type of book or so l thought.
I couldn't have been more wrong l thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it even though the first quarter was a little slow after that the plot really picks up
and there are so many twists in the plot you just didn't know what was going to happen next. The heroine of the book is a young lawyer - Anna Kennedy
whose job is to protect the stars from the media. The one thing that really impressed me with this book is how much knowledge of media law Tasmina Perry
has - she has either a profound knowledge through meticulous research or she has studied media law at some point.

l expected chock lit and when l finished reading l realised to call it chick lit is doing Tasmina Perry a great disservice it really is a great work of
fiction which kept me engrossed and entertained and l really was sorry to finish it - read it and enjoy....

By Ms. C. A. Anderson VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
On first glance, this book looks massive and could potentially take a long time to read. But this couldn't be more wrong!

You will not be able to put it down even if you wanted to as you are instantly hooked from the word go!

Anna, our lead character ignites a lot of empathy with the reader due to her unlucky in love past and feel and she, like many of us women and of course men, she doesn't seem to be able to get it right. Instead she avoids it and constantly puts her work career in law ahead of herself and her needs. The nice thing about that is, that she is a lawyer for celebrities, which is a new take not really covered a lot in books before, it added a nice touch and different side to what we all read in the gossip mags and in the papers, showing just what lengths those in power have to go to help their celebrity clients stay out the papers and avoid scandal. Very current considering the whole celebrity injunctions as of late too.

Anna is new to the law firm who specialise in these matters and everything doesn't really go to plan when she tries to impress on a big job trying to stop information on a big scandal for a Hollywood actor called Sam Charles. Being the new recruit she is the scape goat and is left to bear the brunt of the failure in preventing it from happening.

It becomes clear though that this wasn't her fault, we the reader are privy to our own scandal, that she was deliberately set up... and what uncovers in a mystery like fashion of piecing together information and circumstances surrounding a young women's death leads her to some scandal she may wish she hadn't uncovered...

While not having read any of her other works I will definetly be checking them out since this one was so enjoyable. It was full of tension mounting moments, twists and opens the window for a look in to what goes on behind closed doors of some of the famous and rich.
