Biography

Anna Mae Bullock was born in Tennessee, but moved to St. Louis as a teenager. There she met rock and roll performer Ike Turner and persuaded him to let her join his backing vocalists. Eventually Anna impressed Ike so much that he gave her equal-billing, and the new name "Tina". They became the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, and married in 1962. Through the 60s they forged a reputation as ... Read more in Amazon's Tina Turner Store

Tina Turner’s classic album from 1984 has been substantially enhanced with the addition of seven tracks, including wonderful extended versions of What’s Love Gotta Do With It, Better Be Good To Me and I Can’t Stand The Rain. This makes Private Dancer even more of an essential album as it remains Turner’s masterpiece from the eighties, an album of brilliant material exquisitely interpreted. It’s a concept album loosely based on a stripper’s life, a bit like Donna Summer’s Bad Girls from 1979 and it amply showcases Tina Turner’s multifaceted talents. The bitter What’s Love Got To Do With It and the melancholy title track, both passionate ballads, were massive hits. Better Be Good To Me and Steel Claw are scorching rockers while she really adds a new dimension to her covers of Help and Let’s Stay Together, another top 10 hit. I love Tina’s interpretation of the Anne Peebles song I Can’t Stand The Rain which was also a hit for Eruption way back in 1978. Private Dancer is a triumph of epic proportions, not only Turner’s comeback album but a timeless masterpiece of exceptional songs infused with enough raunch to please her hardcore fans from the early days and enough pop appeal for the mainstream. Never before had her voice been wrapped around such quality but accessible and melodic material as on Private Dancer, making for a consistently enjoyable album with broad appeal. This reissue with the extra tracks is superb value for money – get it!

This is surely one of Tina's best albums to-date. All 80's classics, but still sounding as good today as back then. What a true star she is! A must for all TT fans.

What hasn't already been said about this landmark album? That is marked the comeback of a major 60's talent? That it won numerous Grammys and awards? That it spawned several career reviving (and defining) hits for the Artist?

All those things have been said, so what can I tell you that's new?

I love it because it yells '1984' in its production and packaging, but it also sashays 'class' through the sheer force, delivery and subtletly of Tina Turners' peformances. It's both raucous ('Steel Claw' exceptionally so) and sophisticated ('Private Dancer'). The only track I'm not so keen on is the cover of 'Help'.

The cover of Bowies' '1984' is also really weird given that several of his songs would suit T.T much better (I'd love to hear her cover 'Rock n' Roll With Me' or 'Who Can I Be Now?')but I guess it was included cos the album came out in 1984.

Anyhoo its a great piece of work, slightly dated, but full of great vocals.

This is a mixture of songs written by admirers, and others that were already well known. It's the Queen of raunchiness herself and her unmistakable delivery that make this album what it is.
I'm not a massive Tina Turner fan..... probobly because for me her later releases didn't push her to the dizzy heights of this masterpiece.

Tina Turner shot back in the charts after a ten year absence as if she'd never been away. Not a bad feat considering she was forty five years old (no chicken then for more than a quarter of a century ago in the music business) and the fact that as a result of her amazing comeback, succeeded in having a massive selling album that included several 'covers'!

Her re-emergence was made with the beautiful Al Greene number: 'Let's Stay Together' at the close of 1983, and this album would guarantee her lasting success with another three hits - more notably: 'What's Love Got To Do With It' - her biggest in 1984.

'Private Dancer' is probably her greatest album, and as myself; many people would have bought this that had perhaps never purchased one of her albums before - and may never would again it had such wide appeal - and all to her lasting credit!
