Biography

John Surman’s solo albums occupy a special and important place in his discography. “Saltash Bells” is the first since 1994’s “A Biography of the Rev. Absalom Dawe”, and it joins a line of distinguished recordings that begins with “Westering Home” (Island, 1972) and continues with the ECM albums “Upon Reflection” (1979), ... OF ALL JOHN SURMAN's SOLO WORKS ON E C M,THIS IS POSSIBLY THE MOST CONVENTIONALLY MELODIC,WITH NUMEROUS FOLK INFLUENCES IN EVIDENCE.IF YOU ENJOY THIS ASPECT OF SURMAN'S WORK THEN THIS RECORDING IS ESSENTIAL LISTENING.

Bought this after hearing just one track and hoped the rest of it would be as inspiring. Not sure that it was...! Still pleased with it on the whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good portrait indeed 7 Sep 2005
By Jacek Lazarczyk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"Portrait of a Romantic" could be the subtitle of this album. It's touching with a range of emotions. John Surman is a master arranger. Despite the fact the he plays all of the instruments, he leaves himself enough space for dramatic solos (mostly on soprano saxophone). Some shorter pieces are little more abstract, others have a gentle groovy undercurrent. The music makes you shiver when listened to late at night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Listen to the stories from John Surman 24 Jun 2004
By "uwatuhiko" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The first time I listened to "Portrait of Romantic", I was so impressed , feel like immersing into the depth of a human.
It's like a beauty of sadness.
And i had never imagined the instrument, bass clarinet brought such a intricate expression to me.
Of course, Eric Dolphy was a virtuoso with it, and now I claim that John Surman is the one after Eric.
A Beautiful Album.

5.0 out of 5 stars sounds like surman to me 28 May 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
He does play bass clarinet, recorders, soprano and baritone saxophones, and uses a synthesizer on this disc. Perhaps the previous reviewer isn't familiar with the range of acoustic and electronic sounds that Surman has mastered. (I do, however, agree with the 'star rating' the previous reviewer awards the album.)

5.0 out of 5 stars great music - but NOT John Surman 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The linked audio samples are great, but I think someone's connected them to the wrong CD title.
