Book Description

9 July 2012
Michael O'Brien spent eleven years in prison for a crime he didn't commit - the so-called Cardiff Newsagent Murder. Since having his conviction quashed in December 1999, Michael has worked tirelessly to ensure that those falsely convicted of crimes are exonerated. In this book he gives an in-depth analysis of the prison system as he recounts the time he spent in jail. He also discusses the experiences of other prisoners, interviews prison and probation officers about good practice, and shares the thoughts of politicians, academics and interested parties in the way forward for our penal system. Michael concludes that there are very many weaknesses in the prison system and that prison reform needs to be much higher on the current political agenda.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prisons Exposed by Michael O'Brien 24 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is easy to read, in one sense, but difficult to read in another, when one remembers that the author's experiences in prison should never have happened in the first place.

It is simply written so that anybody can understand and get to grips with it, from the academic to the newly released ex convict. Completely unpretentious, the trauma and pain that the author went through during his years of wrongful imprisonment after being wrongly convicted of murder, screams out from the pages.

He was a young lad when he went in and an adult on release after a successful appeal against conviction. It must have caused him a huge amount of stress to relive his experiences in the many prisons he was forced to 'live' in, yet he has done this exceptionally well without any sense of self pity.

It's a must-read book. I could not put it down. I look forward to reading his other book "The Death of Justice".

What is also noteworthy is that all profits from the sale of this book, and "The Death of Justice" will go to the "Dylan O'Brien Foundation" - raising aware for Mucopolysaccharidosis and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting 24 Sep 2012
By Nicola
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very informative and interesting insight into uk prisons by a man who spent eleven years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. It's very well balanced as it puts forward the points of view of both prisons and staff. Certainly it highlights the many failings within our prisons and also Michael O'Brien puts forward very valid solutions for change. Definitely worth reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener of the Prison System In the UK 15 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
You would expect for an ex prisoner (Michael O'Brien) for this book to be really bias in favour of prisoners however The writer has balanced the book out by giving the prison officers point of view as well as the prisoners views which makes this book very unique. The writer Talks about Deaths in custody, Children in prison, women in prison. and explains how the system works. Points out the serious flaws within the prison system which many people are not aware of. Violence in prison appears to be a regular thing and the writer explains that it is not only prison officers who get beaten up and that prisoners also face the wrath of some officers overstepping the mark. Very interesting and informative book which will open a lot of peoples eyes to the realities of prisons. I've read many Books on Prisons and this has to be the best one I've Read you will not be disappointed C. L Walker
