Product Description

Prisoners of War is the gripping ten-part drama on which the American series Homeland is based. When three Israeli Defence Force reservists are captured behind enemy lines in Lebanon their fate is unknown, that is until seventeen years later, when they mysteriously return - two of them alive, the third in a coffin. The story of their time in captivity unfolds as they attempt to reintegrate into society; trying to cope with the pressures of being reintroduced to their families and friends, as well as handling the national hero status being thrust upon them via the public limelight. The gripping plot unravels through three time plains; before capture, life in captivity and present day, which all intertwine to reveal dark secrets about their life in captivity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, gripping and thoughtful 4 July 2012
Format:DVD
How could anyone cope with being a prisoner of war for 17 long years? This is a gripping psychological thriller with very strong characters. I thought it would be exactly the same as the US series Homeland, but this is far superior. It is very well written and acted with believable and sympathetic characters that you really come to care about. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Gripping 16 July 2012
Format:DVD
I can only say this is so superior to Homeland. The acting is excellent and the storyline is so moving although the connection between Homeland storyline becomes more obvious as the series moves on. The last episode was just spellbinding.
Luckily enought Series 2 is being filmed or has been filmed this year in Israel, and I for one can't wait to see it.
Once again an fantastic series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Yankees 5 July 2012
Format:DVD
I totally agree with the other reviewers. This original, less sensationalized more human version is far
superior than the American. When watching,I was eagerly waiting the next episode. I know people who
would dismiss this version due to subtitles, that is a mistake. The acting, writing and direction is
excellent. Through great story-lines and characterization we witness the complexities of these
returning prisoners as they try to adapt to 'freedom'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good. 14 Feb 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I heard alot about this and it being the inspiration for the Showtime hit Homeland, that is screened on Channel 4 in the UK.
The series was run on a channel i can't get so got the DVD and just from the first episode, its excellent.
It has hard-coded on-screen English subtitles (Means they are on screen whether you want them or not) and as speaker of Hebrew, they are almost identical for translation, with just a few bits here and there changed to account for the 'lost in translation' reasons.

One downside i found though, is the commercial distributor of the DVD's, Arrow, were to lazy to translate the credits at the end.
They had the subtitles done, they translated the headlines of the papers and news bulletins, but not the credits. Very lazy and very poor for non-Hebrew speakers.

One thing i will suggest though is, expect alot of twists and turns, if you saw Homeland like i did first, don't watch this expecting a like-for-like copy because its not.
While some of the plot is the same, including the daughters' name, Dana, go into this like you haven't a remote clue what will happen, it makes it so much easier to follow.
Great gripping, shocking stunning viewing.
If you like that sort of stuff, i recommend hugely.

If you have watched Homeland but found it a bit too clean cut to be accurate, and full of holes, then this is for you.
This is a roller-coaster ride of emotions but you can't stop watching.

Amazingly done and excellent acting, music, cinematography, ...

You will watch this more than once :)

PS Roll on series 2 being released.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best dramas, ever! 29 July 2012
Format:DVD
The title says it all. Prisoners of War, or 'Hatufim' as it is called in Israel, is one of the best television shows to hit our shores in a very long time. Totally gripping, stunning and powerful, POW is beautifully acted and directed. I'm saying nothing about the plot. The less you know about it, the better it is, even if you have seen its American remake, Homeland. POW blows Homeland straight out of the water, and that's coming from someone who LOVED Homeland.
Buy this DVD set. You won't regret it. Emotionally charged and gut wrenching, POW is one of the best dramas I've ever seen.
Don't be put off by the subtitles. If you judge a show on that, you're missing out on one of the best TV shows ever made.
A second series has been made, and will be shown in Israel later this year. Hopefully it won't be long before it hits the UK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prisoners of war 12 Jan 2013
By Mr. D. Rowland TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I tried to watch "Homeland" but I couldn't stay the course because I found it too long drawn out but I found "Prisoners of war" a brilliant ten part Israeli series far more gripping and engaging and it is harrowing and deeply moving in places. It is very well made, exciting and the acting is superb. You cannot help but feel for the soldiers of Israeli who live in a country that has been on a constant state of alert ever since it was founded in 1948. Because of this the population are frequently called on to serve in combat situations risking death, injury or kidnapping by an enemy that they know will show them no mercy if they fall into their hands.

I was too young to remember when Israel was established in 1948 but as someone who has had a lifetime interest in history, politics and current affairs I certainly remember all the wars that the Arabs and Israel have fought since then. This intractable dispute shows no sign of being solved - each side has a legitimate claim to live in the middle east, they have both been there for at least two thousand years but they cannot seem to be able to live together in peace or share the land. Both sides have adopted deeply entrenched positions and have shown no willingness to make meaningful concessions and so long as this situation continues the middle east dispute which intermitently breaks out into being full scale warfare will never be settled.

Gideon Raff's film is centred around the lives of three Israeli soldiers, two of whom are released from captivity after seventeen years in captivity and the effect this has on them and their families. The soldiers are brutally treated, they are deeply traumatised by their experience and they find it very hard to adjust to freedom when it comes.
