Product Description

It's busy on the staff side of the bars as Officer Colleen Powell takes over from Vera as Chief, while new officer Conway tries to hide the fact she used to be an inmate. New boy Steve Fawkner is reduced to his pants during a riot and after over 200 episodes, Jim Fletcher finally leaves Wentworth forever.

With a three way fight to become top dog, Bea's not making the running as she needs a new kidney and Doreen's not sure if she wants Bea to have hers.

Add arson, kidnapping and the introduction of new uniforms all round and it's another superb 32 episodes of classic Prisoner Cell Block H action.

Including over an hour extra of DVD extras: Reminisce with Val Lehman - The Shower, Letter Bomb, Dangerous Props, Pigsworth.

Well we get to see Volume 8, Episodes 225-256. Colleen Powell (Judith McGrath) comes to the fore as an aggressive replacement for Vera Bennett (Fiona Spence). Governor Erica Davidson (Patsy King) is kidnapped by the radical friends of political inmate, the very selfish and manipulative antagonist Andrea Hennessy (Bethany Lee), which leads to a fatal shootout with the Police of one of the kidnappers and the eventual suicide of another, Linda Golman (Mary Charleston).

Bea Smith (Val Lehman) becomes seriously ill with renal failure and needs a kidney transplant operation. The arrival of new inmates Kate Peterson (the late Olivia Hamnett) and Sandy Edwards (Louise Le Nay) heralds a change of pace, and along with the arrival of volatile Barnhurst Top Dog Marie Winter (Maggie Millar), the 1981 season ends with the riot episode being the last one shown during the original Australian 1981 run . Two new officers Steve Faulkner (played by the late Wayne Jarratt), and Janet Conway (Kate Sheil), also arrive and Deputy Governor Jim Fletcher (Gerard Maguire) says goodbye to Wentworth, and of course poor Lizzie ( the late, great Sheila Florance),faces trial accused of arson on Sid Humphrey's house.

All in all, an enjoyable 32 episode romp, which features extras with Val Lehman reminiscing on the show.

First shown on the Central ITV region in 1989 and the Granada region in 1990. Aired on Channel Five UK in 1998.

Volumes 8 and 9 of Prisoner: Cell Block H feature one missing element - a nasty screw. Following the departure of Vera Bennett (Fiona Spence) in episode 224, we start this discset with episode 225 and we see Colleen Powell (Judith McGrath) keenly stepping into Vera's shoes. Colleen never turns out to be as nasty as Vera was, but at the evry end of the next volume we will be introduced to the far nastier Joan Ferguson (Maggie Kirkpatrick).
Episodes 225 - 256 feature a riot, a kidnapping, a suicide, an arson, a job promotion, a hospitalisation, a transfer to Barnhurst, a fresh start for Lizzie Birdsworth (the late Sheila Florance) and two new prison officers (played by Kate Shiel and the late Wayne Jarrett). Meg Morris (Elspeth Ballantyne) seems to be very easily talked into returning into her Wentworth greys. New inmates include Kate Petersen (the late Olivia Hamnett), Sandy Edwards (Louise Le Nay) and Marie Winters (Maggie Millar). Watching the story involving Kate Petersen is certainly one of the best in the entire series and Kate is certainly a welcome addition to the series. She is certainly a welcome replacement for Alison Page (Fay Kelton). We also get another rare outing for Erica Davidson's (Patsy King) home. Also the homes of Janet Conway and Meg Morris are also featured quite alot.
Originally screened in Australia at the end of 1981 (episodes 247 - 256 screened in early 1982), these epsiodes were screened in the UK from autumn 1988 onwards.
The end credits no longer feature the instrumental version (last used in episode 221) and the end credits do make some confusing reading - the copyright year states 1980, however these epsiodes were all clearly made in 1981.
If you're missing Vera and earger to see The Freak's arrival, do not despair - you are not too far away from
- cough cough "Where do I sign on?". The famous first few words of the woman who would go on to terrorise everyone in Wentworth (episode 287).
Well that's next time. Enjoy a Vinegar-less Wentworth!
