'Prepare to have your timbers well and truly shivered by Paul Dowswell and his naval warfare novels, already hailed as "Patrick O'Brian for kids". With detail that points to extensive research and a plot with more snap than a cat o' nine tails, we join Sam on his journey from terrified "powder monkey" with a gun crew to experienced sailor who knows the ropes.' 4.0 out of 5 stars I eat cannibals, 30 Aug 2007
By Binro The Heretic "mattieboyz" (Hillsborough, Sheffield) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Following the rip-roaring 'Powder Monkey' Paul Dowswell has produced another excellent adventure for young sailor Sam Witchall. This time around he is framed by scheming crewmates and stands trial for cowardice, leading to a perilous quest for justice that takes him to the other side of the world and back.
It is easy to carp about simplistic prose but this novel does exactly what it says on the tin: it entertains and is 'unputdownable'. Again, the charm lies in the writer's use of first-person narrative and the unflagging action that lies within. My only quibble, and the reason I have given four rather than five stars, is that the majority of the action takes place on land rather than on a ship. I really enjoyed Powder Monkey's vivid descriptions of the cruel and unenviable life of an ordinary British 'Jack Tar'; something that is sacrificed in 'Prison Ship'. This is only a very minor grumble though and has in no way sated my appetite for the series...roll on number three!

5.0 out of 5 stars A kids book with adult appeal, 17 April 2009
By Steerforth (Sussex) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I read 'Powder Monkey' to my son at bedtime and was so gripped by the novel's pace and realism, I couldn't wait to begin 'Prison Ship'. Dowswell is an incredibly gifted writer who combines a rigorous scholarship with a wonderful imagination. My son loved 'Prison Ship' and although some of it was a little over his head, he found the narrative really exciting.

Dowswell's books use a few liberally scattered mild swearwords - probably nothing compared to the original nautical expletives - which my son absolutely loved, giggling naughtily. This had the effect of transforming what could have been a very 'worthy' book into a fun activity.

The end result - both my son and I really enjoyed the story and he now knows a lot more about the period. If all historical novels were this readable, we'd be in clover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super, 2 April 2009
The sequuel to [[ASIN:074759595X Powder Monkey, Prison Ship is just as gripping, fascinating and unputdownable.
Prison Ship begins with Sam and Richard on a war ship, excited about the fourth coming battle. Once on the journey, Sam over hears some of the lieutenants plotting in the hold. When they find out Sam over heard, Sam and Richard are trapped by the lieutenants son, a midshipman. Accused of cowardice, Richard and Sam are going to hang but some fortunate twist of fate saves them and has them transported to Australia instead...
I was unable to put this book down as I felt totally caught up in the world Dowsell has created. Somehow, the reader seems to be transported themselves to the 1800's world of Navy punishments and feel as if they are alongside Sam and Richard as they journey the seas and the australian bush.
A must read for adults and children alike. Well done Dowsell:-)
