Product Description

Product Description

'Discovering the power in praise was one of the most exciting experiences I'd ever had,' writes Merlin Carothers.

In simple terms he describes how his life was transformed by finding faith in Christ. Using many stories from his own experience as a US army chaplain, he issues a radical challenge to praise God in all circumstances. 'Miracles, power and victory will all be part of what God does in our lives when we learn to rejoice in all things,' he promises.

I would start by saying that Mr. Carothers is a man of God with a heart for people and has definitely been used by God. Parts of this book clearly reveal this. However, it is also clear, especially in the latter parts of the book, that he has come under demonic deception. I have been a Christian for many years and I have personally experienced demonic deception. Let me illustrate with some examples.

In Chapter 7, the author said that the Holy Spirit ordered him to get out of bed! He later threatened that if he wouldn't learn a lesson in the bathroom, He would make him learn the lesson by forcing him to go back to bed and there, immobilise him!! Quite simply, God NEVER does these things. He does not take an aggressive domineering attitude with us. As soon as I read this and other parts, immediately warning bells that something was wrong started to ring.

Later, it said that he had been having headaches for several years and one day, God allegedly asked him why he had not thanked God FOR the headaches. He continued to praise God FOR giving him the pain and then suddenly there was a break-through. The suggestion was that by praising God FOR giving him pain, relief came. Nowhere in the Bible are we asked to thank God FOR bad things but we are asked to give thanks to God IN all situations (1 Thessalonians 5:18). I believe that demons, including an evil spirit of pain, successfully persuaded him to twist the scriptural meaning from IN to FOR. The demons went to all this trouble because they want people to think that God deliberately causes them pain which naturally, makes having a relationship with God very difficult (as Carothers witnessed in people when he told them to give thanks to God FOR causing pain). The correct Biblical understanding is that we give thanks to God IN all situations and pray for deliverance from pain. Proof that it was demonic can be seen in his admission that he had been having these headaches for several years. God does not cause people pain for years in order to one day teach them a lesson!!

Furthermore, I have read a lot of books written by Christians in which God moves powerfully and sometimes miraculously in their lives. I have heard of God speaking a few words (especially of comfort to people in distress) but I have never read of Him entering into back and forth running conversations with us. Demons however, typically try to do just this such as when they work as deceiving spirits presenting themselves to unsuspecting people as kindly 'spirit guides' or 'loving angels'.

Quite simply, Mr. Carothers has been listening to deceiving demonic spirits as I think I have proven from the above examples. However, I would say here that many of his experiences, especially in the earlier part of the book, appear to be genuinely of God.

Should a reader want to expand his/her knowledge of the glories of God as revealed in the lives of ordinary men and women, try books such as: Chasing the Dragon by Jackie Pullinger, God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew, The Torn Veil by Gulshan Esther, Sergei by Sergei Kourdakov and Tramp for the Lord by Corrie Ten Boom.

This book pulls off something of a stunt. The author manages to convince the reader that even in the most difficult and unpleasant of circumstances that we should, and can, be truly grateful to God, and praise Him.

In my opinion that really is a feat. But he goes further even than that in convincing the reader that this is completely within our grasp, as ordinary and flawed as we are. And the book does this without adding to or diminishing scripture. In fact the author demonstrates that this is to be found in the bible.

This book is most particularly valuable to habitual grumblers and the desperate. If you can see yourself possibly becoming bitter and resentful against God, if your worst fears were to be realised, then read this book. If you are despairing then read this book. Fearful of suffering, then read this book. If you just want to be inspired then read this book.

The book is short, remarkably persuasive, non-intellectual, fun, and thoroughly biblical. And the author isn't talking theory; he writes about events in his own life. The book isn't a magic incantation for our problems; what it describes isn't that easy, but it makes us realise that what may have seemed impossible has always been within our reach.

For catholics, as this is a non-catholic book : I don't remember reading anything unsound neither the first nor second time. His second book does suffer from some problems, in this regard, but "Prison To Praise" is just a telling of a story, and untouched by reformation ideas, to my memory. Having said that I'm not a theology scholar, and I didn't read the book looking for problems (which are difficult to miss in the second book).

This book teaches you to praise God and give thanks even in difficult circumstances. It works! As we praise God He takes hold of the situation and works it for our good.
