Biography

Born in Harlingen, Texas, smack in the middle of a family of five children, to an Air Force Major and a registered nurse, Beth grew up all over the place – a self-described “geographical mutt.” Her family finally settled in Alabama in 1969 when Beth was just going into the ninth grade, moving there from Munich, Germany. Crossing back over the ocean with her came her first ... Read more in Amazon's Beth Nielsen Chapman Store

Product Description

Product Description

Beth Nielsen Chapman is an artist of extraordinary talent. Having released seven albums, four of which were on Warner Brothers, including her groundbreaking album 'Sand And Water', Beth soon became recognised as an outstanding and skilful songwriter and performer. Many of her songs have been covered by a wide selection of artists including Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Ute Lempter and more. Beth's new album is a unique project which is close to her heart, having taken several years to complete, Prism is a 2CD collection of 23 songs celebrating the spectrum and spiritual diversity of humankind. As always Beth Nielsen Chapman's experiences and personal journeys inform the self-reflective nature of this beautiful album. As well as many self-penned songs there are several traditional songs which Beth sings in Spanish, Latin and Welsh.

Review

Having survived cancer - which killed her husband - Chapman spent several years piecing together this diverse 2-CD offering. OK, it's religious, and many might find that off-putting. But the quality of the songwriting is impressive, befitting a writer whose creations have been covered by Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris and others. Chapman is hardly your everyday hymn-hoister, although she sings For The Beauty Of The Earth, a Sunday school favourite from 1894, and the traditional Be Still My Soul. But elsewhere Chapman raps in rewarding fashion in My Religion (Sweet Love) before moving on to provide a nod to differing religions and beliefs with the inclusion of Hebrew, Welsh, Navajo, Tibetan and Zulu material, the latter suggested by Archbishop Tutu. -- Fred, Della, MOJO

Beth Nielsen Chapman has taken on a long lasting project, and finally delivered the results after some years in the making. It clearly is a labour of love, and a brave attempt to complete a project close to her heart.
Beth's voice is exceptional throughout the double album, and recording quality is high. The simple traditional hymns have a clarity and simplicity that makes them highly effective.
In the first disc there are one or two stand out tracks Shine all your Light , and Beautiful Fool. There just seems to be this slightly self indulgent streak running through the entire CD. The rap based number simply seems to be there to satisfy every musical genre on the Cd, and fails badly.
The second CD is interesting and perhaps works as a chill out in a darkened room, but again fails to cary any weight.
I feel BNC has hopefully put this project to bed, and will return with a new offering in the future that returns her to form and shows off her imense talent to a wider audience. She is a great singer, but this offering does not stand up to Look or Deeper Still in recent years.
Incidentaly, the cover is cheap looking , and sort of sums up the whole album. Well meant, but ultimately a let down. A shame really from such a great artist, song writer and live performer.
I have just revisited this album after a month or so, and having seen Beth live in concert (Superb, by the way) I have to admit that the album has grown on me, particularly the second disc. So perhaps less of a let down, but a VERY slow burner. Go back, choose your moment and give it another listen or two!

After anxiously awaiting the arrival of Beth Neilsen Chapman's new cd, I was a little disappointed in the album itself. All of the songs have religious undertones and messages, which definitely may scare some listeners. However, saying that, this album celebrates all mankind. Every religion is explored and the message to this album is that all people should be celebrated and we are all equals, no exceptions! What a great message in today's times.
The one thing that is a constant, is Beth's voice. It sends chills up and down your spine. Her tones are like no others. It doesn't matter what her songs are about, one listen to her voice and you can't help but be carried away to another place. It is mesmerising! Listening to disc two was an experience to exercise with the lights dimmed, letting the stresses of the day disappear. Simply stunning!
If we all can get beyond the religious aspects of this album and realise the message Beth is trying to communicate in Prism, we can be one step closer in making this world a better place. What better way to do it with Beth's special gift of songwriting and vocals.

This is easily one of the best albums of the decade if you are prepared to give it a good listen. There are no dud tracks although some of the lyrics may be perceived as having religious connections. The songs are generally about universal spirituality and human love. The singing and instrumental sounds are exceptionally vibrant and imaginative. Beth is also one of the greatest live performers I have ever seen so I recommend going to see her if you have not had the chance.

At first when I got it I was probably a 3 - 4 stars but over time I have listened to it more and more and now I am definately at 5 stars on it.

Another person said they didnt think the rap was there except to saitsfy a genre well my 12 year old loves it and insists I play it all the time in the car so I dont think its a token piece at all. Prayer of an Athiest is just mind blowing.

I was lucky enough to see Beth in concert at the Barbican last night and she played tracks from this album and she was stupendeous - the album is great but you may need time ot listen to it a bit to really get into it....

This is my second purchase of this CD. I lent my copy to someone else and it hasn't been returned. I really missed the songs and music from this thought provoking and inspirational CD.
