Paul Coldwell has created a well-made book that provides essential reading and reference for the growing number of people who understand printmaking as an integral part of the contemporary arts. The text is concise and the illustrations are both widespread and varied in subject matter and technique, with a generous number of full-page reproductions. The introductory chapter on the history of printmaking, based on the wide range of processes that can be used, may offer surprises to those who (despite the efforts of many contemporary writers and critics) still consider printmaking to be some sort of craft-based backwater, subservient and inferior to the 'fine arts' of painting and sculpture. The choice of artists in this chapter is wide, ranging from the mastery of Albrecht Durer to the contemporary challenges of Thomas Kilpper and Wenda Gu. This range establishes well the broad approach that Coldwell takes in addressing his chosen field. The remainder of the book leads the reader through the extensive territory in which contemporary printmaking operates, from the reworking of traditions, links to painting and sculpture, to hybrid prints, the connections with politics, and onwards into the expanded print and the challenge of new technologies. While all these sections provide a good introduction, the decision to include a large number of full-page images (which are in their own right of interest and value) means that the informative text is necessarily concise. Nevertheless, this does not diminish the value and attraction of this book, and indeed should encourage those who read it and consult it to look further and to seek out other books on contemporary printmaking, the number of which is increasing as printmaking moves to the position it deserves, at the centre of the contemporary visual arts. I am not alone in the opinion that printmaking, in all its varied forms and with all its potential, may well turn out to be a major force in the visual arts of the 21st century. Paul Coldwell's book is a welcome introduction to the challenges and delights of contemporary printmaking, and is highly recommended for students, art lovers, and all those with an interest in the role that the visual arts can play in leading towards a fuller understanding of the world in which we live.
