Product Description

Product Description

Printmaking is both an inspirational insight into the art and craft of printmaking and also a comprehensive guide to printmaking techniques. Interviews with leading artists give readers an understanding of different working methods, and explorations of printhouses and workshops reveal developments within the various media in this field. Contemporary imagery from leading international artists makes this an exciting, visual encyclopedia. Chapters are arranged according to printmaking technique. Each chapter begins with a full-page print from the featured artist, followed by an interview explaining the medium used. This is followed with a breakdown of the methods undertaken, illustrated with step-by-step photos. Areas of the selected prints are isolated to show the diverse technical processes used by each artist. A comprehensive resources section lists suppliers, workshops, and studios, and provides a synopsis of the various presses, inks, and papers available.

This book does something that many art books fail to do. It engages the reader. It is not dry and overly technical. It contextualises every aspect of printmaking, by relating it directly to artists who use the techniques. These artists recall their earliest experiences of art and go on to discuss how they use print within their work. I had never heard of any of them which I think makes it better as they didn't tend to use artspeak when they talked about printmaking.
It is a very readable book with very clear instructions on how you could reproduce any of the techniques explored and discussed within the book. I would recommend this book to amateurs and professionals alike. It should be in every school, college and university library as it is so accessible everyone could pick it and use it for reference or inspiration.
I'm a master printmaker and I learnt a great deal from reading it, which I did (except for chapter on silkscreen). I've never been a fan.

Beautiful book ! 6 Mar 2009

I read the other review and almost decided against buying this book. I am really glad I did buy it. Firstly, it is a really beautifully put together book. Secondly, the information provided, i.e. step-by-step instructions are really helpful (the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is there is a little inconsistentcy with the guides, and they could be clearer - I can make sense of them as I have done a little printing, but if you haven't you might find it hard; also missing, how to set out a registration properly). I'm not sure the artist's info is hugely relevant or interesting, but all in all, beautiful book that I will be referring to over and over.

This book seems to cover not only the basics but also some ideas for developing and personalizing the processes. Bit of a shame that the use of Ferric Chloride is not covered, as it is a much safer method and has less environmental impact issues. Fab book. If I hadn't bought it I would be looking to buy it!!
