Product Description

Synopsis

Print on demand is a new technology that is being adopted by both small and large publishing companies. Instead of printing several thousand copies of a book in one go and storing them until they are needed, print on demand enables publishers to print single copies of books as and when they are required. This technology goes hand-in-hand with the digital manipulation of files, and digital, web-based work-flows. The digital nature of the printing means that there are complex quality issues when it comes to text and graphics. In order to achieve the best illustrations, photos and text it is necessary to go through a lot of experimentation before achieving the required results. This book helps you avoid all that by looking at the issues involved. It includes: - Extensive examples of fonts; outlined, grayed, etc. - Resolution and detail issues of images - Dealing with line and shaded illustrations - Fine tuning of drop shadows - Checking page alignment - Comparisons of vector and bitmapped images And much more. This book deals specifically with the printing process used by one of the most popular suppliers of print on demand services; Lightning Source. and includes many comprehensive examples of different styles and graphic techniques enabling you to see for yourself what works and what doesn t. A vital reference for anyone wanting to get the best results from their print on demand project with Lightning Source. Find out more on www.idhub.com/pod

4.0 out of 5 stars Good print samples, 17 Dec 2005
By Aaron Shepard - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Print-On-Demand: A Graphics Handbook (Paperback)
This book provides samples of graphics and type as printed by Lightning Source, Inc., the print supplier for iUniverse, Xlibris, and almost every other print-on-demand publishing service. If you are doing a print-on-demand book with graphics, this will show you what to expect. And as far as I know, it's the only book of its kind, so it provides a valuable service.

Unfortunately, the book is marred by horrible typography inside that ignores the advice given in the book itself about using larger sizes and less delicate typefaces. On the cover, the type is fuzzy because it was not made pure black, and the bar code lines are jagged, showing that the authors did not know to avoid a transparent background. Also, they don't know enough to produce their TIFFs at 600 dpi when needed to preserve detail in small text and lines. And I won't get into the many typos and text errors.

Hopefully they'll correct these deficiencies in future versions.
