This bestselling text provides a balance between the technical and practical aspects of structural equation modeling (SEM). Using clear and accessible language, Rex B. Kline covers core techniques, potential pitfalls, and applications across the behavioral and social sciences. Some more advanced topics are also covered, including estimation of interactive effects of latent variables and multilevel SEM. The companion Web page offers downloadable syntax, data, and output files for each detailed example for EQS, LISREL, and Mplus, allowing readers to view the results of the same analysis generated by three different computer tools. New to This Edition:

  • thoroughly revised and restructured to follow the phases of most SEM analyses
  • syntax, data, and output files for all detailed research examples are now provided online
  • exercises with answers, which support self-study
  • topic boxes on specialized issues, such as dealing with problems in the analysis; the assessment of construct measurement reliability; and more
  • updated coverage of a more rigorous approach to hypothesis and model testing; the evaluation of measurement invariance; and more.

Product Description

"Kline provides a text that is accessible for graduate students, practitioners, and researchers who are not intimately familiar with SEM techniques. In addition, he effortlessly summarizes current information that researchers who already use SEM should have….A major strength of the book is the individual chapter examples with explanation of the values provided from a variety of statistical analysis packages." - James B. Schreiber, Center for Advancing the Study of Teaching and Learning, Duquesne University, USA

"The coverage is excellent and the writing style is friendly and direct, with a subtle humor that I find refreshing. I especially like the new topic boxes in the third edition, most of which discuss issues that I have had to address separately in lectures." - Jacob Marszalek, Division of Counseling and Educational Psychology, University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA

"This is now the #1 book I will recommend to students and substantive researchers (who are not quantitative specialists) who want to learn SEM! Compared to most SEM books that I have seen, this one strikes a better balance between accessibility and breadth. In the third edition, Kline not only has updated the material, but has substantially improved it." - Noel A. Card, Division of Family Studies and Human Development, University of Arizona, USA

"In the third edition, Kline has improved the pedagogical value of his book relative to prior editions and to other SEM books. The Web page featuring complete computer syntax and data for the examples is very helpful. Other new material further supports a reader’s understanding of SEM." - Craig Wells, School of Education, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, USA

"Of all the introductory SEM texts, this one is the most interesting to read. Anyone who has taken a course in basic algebra or introductory statistics will be able to understand the ideas and work through the exercises, and those who work their way through the book will have a good foundation in SEM and will be able to use it effectively." - David F. Gillespie, George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis, USA

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful textbook! 7 Feb 2012
Although the price is a little bit high but the knowledge is priceless, this book illustrate the theoretical concept of the structural equation modelling by different chapter. The wording are very readable and the exercises after chapters help you to clarified the idea effortlessly. Strongly recommended this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must reference for SEM analysis 15 Mar 2012
By D. Geifman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
With no prior knowledge and no one to assist me I had to learn how to apply SEM in my research work. I got hold of the second edition of this book and found it very helpful. I therefore decided to purchase this third edition and found a jewel. The structure of book changed for the better and it was extended with up to date development and applications of the methodology. I would never have believed that I would so much enjoy reading a statistics book.
The book starts off with a concise overview of the statistical methods which are at the roots of SEM. This overview is just right to give you the broader perspective and the important techniques without going too much into details. It is also used later in the book for reference when details of the SEM methods are discussed.
The book then discusses in depth the various aspects of the SEM methodology. It addresses it from the perspective of the analysis process as well as the analysis techniques. From the process point of view the book takes you from the model specification stage, highlighting the analysis consideration to be taken already at this point, through model identification, analysis and re-evaluation. I especially appreciated the author's emphasis on the important place of theory in the statistical analysis. It's the theory that drives the model and not vice versa.
The book explains well the three different models of SEM: Path Analysis (PA), Confirmative Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Regression. It does this in a way that provides you with a good overview for the first reading and then allows for more details once you decide to start using a specific model. The extensive reference list that is provided with the book allows you to further dig into levels of details that you require.
I am sure that this book will accompany me throughout my research work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for beginners! 4 July 2011
By Zetetic - Published on Amazon.com
This is hands-down one of the most clearly written introductions to SEM available; Rex Kline has a talent for describing both technical and applied topics without mincing words or spilling vast amounts of ink. Virtually everyone in my current quant program loves it. It has the perfect amount of detail (not too little, not too much) to make it a comfortable springboard into the more advanced texts and articles, which should be next on your list. Realize that while this book may make you feel like you know a lot after reading it, you should *not* treat it as a stand-alone resource-- the content is only the tip of the enormous SEM iceberg.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very accessible- communicates the big picture without leaving out the details 21 Dec 2012
By Martin Hilbert - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The problem with most SEM books is that they either contain so much difficult math that you already forget what the purpose of the equation was once you finish studying it, or that they are very dry "how-to" guides that explain how to feed a software program. This book is different: it communicates the big picture, explains the why and the how, and points to areas that require special attention. This is the most clearly written introductions to SEM available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very clear textbook 15 Dec 2012
By Jonathan Lehrfeld - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Used this in an introductory SEM course. We followed this book almost religiously, even though we also were supposed to use the Raykov and Marcoulides book. This book has a good balance of theory and rules of thumb, although perhaps may be not technical enough (in terms of the underlying mathematics) for more advanced users. Comes with a pretty decent collection of syntax files for LISREL, Mplus, and EQS, and there are quite a few interesting and substantive examples that Kline uses in detail throughout the book.
