Product Description

Review

"This is a simply wonderful book that makes accessible in one place all the details of how the neuron and brain work. The writing is clear. The drawings are elegant and educational. The book is a feast for both the eye and mind. The richness, the beauty, and the complexity of neuroscience is all captured in this superb book." "5 Stars!" (Doody's ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

This is the most authoritative introduction to the brain, its structure, function, development, and control of behavior available today. It presents both a comprehensive summary of the state of the science and a full discussion of historical issues in the study of the brain. Neuroanatomy, cell and molecular mechanisms, mechanisms of signaling, and development are thoroughly described in the context of the cognitive approaches to behavior. Thoroughly revised, with a new full-color art program, this text was re-designed to be more user friendly. Also featured is an expanded treatment of the development of the nervous system, the genetic basis of neurological and psychiatric diseases, the cognitive neuroscience of perception, and ion channel mechanisms.

Absolutely brilliiant!! This is the most comprehensive, all-in-one neuroscience textbook on the market. The now Nobel Laureate, Kandel, takes the reader from the very basic molecular details of neurotransmitters and electrophysiology to the higher order behavioural functions of humans and the whole spectrum of neurological disorders... not forgetting ANYTHING in between. Whether used for occasional referencing or as a student Bible by undergarduates, this book has everything you need, and much more. The book is logically laid out and each chapter is fully referenced if the reader wants to delve deeper. Thoroughly recommended.

Neuroscience is one of the hardest courses we study as medical undergraduates here in Oxford. Kandel's book is therefore a blessing. I have recently upgraded to the 4th edition and have found it a significant improvement over the 3rd. The coverage is comprehensive, with lots of experimental evidence, which not only helps in understanding the material, but the examiners love it! The references to the primary material are also excellent. And they've finally got a proper specialist to write the language chapter... (Steve Pinker). The ultimate question - is it better than Zigmond et al? Well...yes.

I have to say this is an exception to a general rule, but here I agree with an Oxford counterpart. This is the finest large-scale neuro text I have so far come across. Its coverage is extensive, yet understandable and in manageable chapters. Experimental evidence is sufficient, not overwhelming, and there is comprehensive cpverage of all major areas - this could do as a textbook to cover anything from molecular development of the neurone to psychology. Poorer explanations than Zigmond in places, but as a whole far better.
