I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this book. I found it to be very solid when I used the 3rd edition.

For those of you who don't like it you have 4 options:

1. "Instrumental Methods of Analysis" by Willard, Merritt, Dean, Settle; (ISBN 0534081428) which is excellent and a true classic. It's OOP now but a new edition comes out in 2016.

2. "Chemical Analysis: Modern Instrumentation Methods and Techniques" by Francis Rouessac & Annick Rouessac

3. "Undergraduate Instrumental Analysis" 7th Edition by James W. Robinson, Eileen M. Skelly Frame, George M. Frame II

4. "Chemical Instrumentation: A Systematic Approach" by Strobel and Heineman. This book is very hardware oriented and is not a true general instrumental analysis text.

I'd also recommend that you buy "Statistics and Chemometrics for Analytical Chemistry" by James N. Miller & Jane C. Miller. It does a much better job than the cursory chapters found in regular analytical texts. Get the 4th or 5th edition. For a paperback, this book is ridiculously expensive if you buy new. Try to find a used copy.

While the book by Miller & Miller is good, it's no substitute for a 1 or 2 semester course in stats. A good book for this material might be Statistics for Research, Third Edition by Shirley Dowdy, Stanley Wearden, Daniel Chilko (ISBN 047126735X)

I used this textbook for an instrumental analysis class. It is very informative and contains helpful schematics and figures to enhance the text material. That being said, it often is a very dense read. I had issues being able to comprehend more than a couple pages in one sitting.

Well, as far as this book goes...it sucks. While it is written in a language most chemistry/analytical students can understand, there is no summary of the instruments without going into excruciating and mostly useless detail. Great reference books for Ph. D's who need an actual reliable, specific book. Not worth the price - get the International Student Edition for $40 - it's exactly the same, even thought it says it MAY not be the same, it is.

I found the organization of the subject material very disorganized. I found myself at times referring to later chapters to understand what was being said in the current chapter. The questions had the same problem. In one particular chapter, I had to refer back several chapters to do the problems. Normally this is not an issue, but these particular problems would have been better suited for the chapter the concept/equation was first introduced... not 7 chapters later.
There were also numerous errors and typos.

I have to use this textbook for one of my classes, and I must say, it is horrible. The examples for problems in the book hardly give any explanation of what they are doing. The questions at the end of the chapter are very difficult and looking back at the chapter just makes the question even more confusing. I like to use textbooks when I do not understand what is going on in my class, but this one does not help at all! I think the only way you can understand this book is if you are already well educated in the course. Everytime I am assigned problems in the book, I cringe, because I know I am going to be spending hours being more confused than I have ever been in my life.
