Product Description

Product Description

This book covers the four forms of fire: diffusion flames, smoldering, spontaneous combustion, and premixed flames. Using a quantitative approach, it presents an ideal introduction to the scientific principles behind fire behavior. Individual sections thoroughly discuss such vital issues as heat transfer, ignition, flame spread, fire plumes, heat flux as a damage variable, and more. Formulas help the student examine fire from a quantitative standpoint. While explaining the science of fire with a precision found nowhere else, the text applies that science to fire safety design and investigation. An excellent book for courses in fire science, architecture, and engineering alike.

This is a fantastic way to grasp the basics of fire dynamics written for the science layman. For a sound practical understanding of fire behaviour this book offers the best place to start.Essential reading for any fire service fire behaviour instructor or budding fire investigator.
The chapters are laid out in a methodical order which makes this book very readable and each element is backed up with simple science projects at the end of the chapter should further understanding be required.

A thorough, quantitative look at fire and flame science 27 Nov 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book does a thorough job of teaching fire science and behavior. Numerous example calculations are given to demonstrate the principles behind different types of flame creation and propagation. This would be a good book for both self study and as a companion guide to a fire science class.

Principles of Fire Behaviour 9 Jan 2005
By Valeriano Barril - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
As the first word states in the title, the book offers a wide overview on fire behaviour. Personaly the book represented the introduction to the Heat Transfer Class during the MSc in Fire Safety Enginnering at UUJ. Providing me with the necessary fundamentals it was a great help to approch further studies of scientific papers.

The book is very well written. It is kept to a simple level for the obvious purpose of providing the student with basic undestanding of complicated issues. From my personal point of view, the simplicity and fluidity of the book are an huge advantage of the work itself, at least among all those which I have came accross.

Strongly advised for those who are approching a fire enginnering degree and also for those professional which need a mental stimulus for solving fire engineering issues. Very interesting: Ignition, Radiation, Fire Behavior, Plume Behavior and the articles collection of fire investigation at the end of the book.

lacks fundamental explinations 4 Nov 2004
By Radio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Being in the fire service for nearly 10 years and an instructor, this book does well for individuals with a decent level of fire knowledge. However, for the fundamental student or beginner fire fighter, this book lacks serious explinations of the basic concepts. This book has done nothing but confuse students with it's constant bombardment of calculations without providing clear explinations.

Outside sources are constantly used to supliment what this book lacks.

If it's used for a begining Fire Engineering or as a suppliment book for Fire Behavior, I would recommend it. But the lack of the fundamentals that it mystically tries to build on, is extremely frustrating and lacks any sort of foundation.

Advanced levels - I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5

Beginner levels - I'd give it a 1 out of 5
