Product Description

Review

'A whole lifetime's work is embodied in this little book. It is only little in size, but in content it is addressing world-wide responsibilities. One can hope that this book will inspire many.' -- Alan Brockman, New View Spring 2006 and Star and Furrow Summer 2006

Product Description

A renowned biodynamic expert, Klett provides a fascinating overview of the history of agriculture, then goes on to discuss the practicalities of spray and compost preparations and the philosophy behind them. This is essential reading for any biodynamic gardener or farmer who wants to understand the background to core biodynamic techniques. It is based on keynote talks given by Manfred Klett at Biodynamic Agricultural Association conferences.

A useful book for basic information, but I did not find it as detailed or specifically helpful at a practical level as I had hoped.

Im am currently trying this method on the merits of the geometry that permeates in produce in relation to planetary cycles (cullpepper might of been onto something that steiner simply borrowed from) but these witches brews are more like voodoo and magic sorcery than organic procedures:

500: A humus mixture prepared by stuffing cow manure into the horn of a cow and buried into the ground, 40-60 cm below the surface, in the autumn and left to decompose during the winter.

501: Crushed powdered quartz prepared by stuffing it into a horn of a cow and buried into the ground in spring and taken out in autumn. It can be mixed with 500 but usually prepared on its own (mixture of 1 tablespoon of quartz powder to 250 litres of water) The mixture is sprayed under very low pressure over the crop during the wet season. It should be sprayed on an overcast day.

Both 500 and 501 are used on fields by stirring the contents of a horn in 40-60 litres of water for an hour and whirling it in different directions every second minute. LOL!!!!!!

502: Yarrow blossoms stuffed into urinary bladders from Red Deer (???? and where to obtain this from????), placed in the sun during summer, buried in earth during winter and retrieved in the spring.

503: Chamomile blossoms stuffed into small intestines from cattle buried in humus-rich earth in the autumn and retrieved in the spring. (??????)

505: Oak bark chopped in small pieces, placed inside the skull of a domesticated animal, surrounded by peat and buried in earth in a place where lots of rain water runs by. LMFAO!!!!! that is laughable!

lurnar planting yes!
wierd potions NO THANKS!

principles of biodynamic sprays and compost 23 April 2009

Having not read Steiner's Agriculture much of the book was very esoteric. It focuses on the spiritual principles and not the how to use it(the preparations) that I am most concerned with. I was looking for more hands on information as I am new to biodynamic farming.Once I have completed reading Agriculture I will read the book again and will probably get more out of it. Still it would be of interest to the reader who wishes to delve into the spiritual aspects of the compost preparations. It certainly is not for the novice practioner.
