The Design Book for Non-designers

Clipart, Comic Sans, and clashing colors ... If any of these fail to make you cringe, this book will teach you why they’re design no-nos.

SitePoint’s best-selling design book, The Principles of Beautiful Web Design, has been revamped to cater to a variety of web professionals without a graphic design or art school background.

By the end of the book, you’ll be able to apply the fundamental principles of design and create beautiful websites of your own—seriously!

Design Is a Skill That Can Be Learned

Many non-designers believe that they’re unable to create visually pleasing websites because they didn’t go to art school, or that they lack creative flair.

Thankfully, this isn’t true.

There are certain design maxims and techniques anyone can learn and apply to ensure that their website is not only functional, but sexy too. No art school required.

Whether you want to improve the look of an ordinary website or learn a new set of skills, The Principles of Beautiful Web Design will teach you good design fundamentals, ensuring that you avoid making any rookie mistakes.

From Paper to Screen …

The second edition of The Principles of Beautiful Web Design has been expanded and revised, and is illustrated with full-color examples. It’s an easy-to-follow guide that will lead you through the process of creating great designs from start to finish.

You’ll learn how to:

• apply color effectively and develop killer color schemes
• construct practical layout foundations using whitespace and grids
• use textures—point, line, shape, volume, depth, and pattern
• master the art of typography to make dull websites dazzle
• choose, edit, and position imagery effectively
• design confidently for mobile devices
• see into the future of web fonts, including @font-face

About the Author:

Jason Beaird is left-handed creative thinker, and art minded. After graduating from UCF with a degree in Graphic Design he’s an artist in his spare time, but also has a tech side. Starting his own BBS in 8th grade, he considered computer science as a possible major, and ended up getting a second degree in digital media from UCF. Fortunately there’s an occupation for people like him in web development and he now works full-time as a designer for Cyberwoven.

Neat but lightweight 24 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback
I was a bit disappointed. I'm not a beginner nor an expert. Some technical books give you something that you get energised about, and want to go try straight away; unfortunately I didn't get anything useful from this book, and only slight inspiration.
On the plus side, it is well written and laid out, has a nice informal air.
For example, this is not for you if you already know about the differences between GIF, JPG and PNG; or if you know a bit about colour wheels and complementary colours; or if you are familiar with web-safe fonts.
Fine for beginners and a little bit after that. Not really for semi-pros onwards.

Excellent! 20 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
This is a well written book with useful practical advice. Manages to cover the basics but also some cutting edge ideas. It is concise and to the point. My only (minor) criticism is that I felt the chapter on typography was a little short on opinion and practical advice on choosing a schema, the topic of styling different tags is an important one in the overall design of the site and would have benefited from a more considered treatment. Having said that however, I cannot recommend this book highly enough - absolutely first rate.

This book is the best book I've bought since 5 years ago. It is well written and very practical. It teaches you how to make things beautiful and this is not limited only to websites. It talks about creating a beautiful layout, choosing the right colours, fonts and images. The book goes on talking about giving your site depth, texture and much more. Above all, it's about £10 cheaper than Waterstones ;-)

Perfect mix
A very useful and practical book, with the (emphasized) design aspects very nicely tied to practical web implementations (i.e. CSS et al.) Highly recommended.

A bit slim but some good stuff
Saw some mixed reviews before buying this, so wasn't sure how impressed I'd be. But as someone who is comfortable with CSS and HTML, but never had to give too much thought to the... Read more

It might inspire you, but it might just bore you
This is a very lightweight book on designing for the web. It is easy to be bamboozled by the pretty pictures and great looking websites that are featured in the book, but the... Read more

Worst web design book I've ever seen
The only beautiful thing about this book is the front cover.
It's slim (168 pages) and grossly overpriced.
The writing is chaotic and disorganized. Read more

Another tidbit for Sitepoint fanboys :(
A vacant experience that covers all the basics. If you're a web desinger already you may prefer a book called 'The priciples of sucking eggs', by your granny. Read more

Excellent intro to design for the web
I like everything about this book! It's a quick read as it's succinct (even though the tone is relaxed and chatty) and there are lots of images. Read more

The author really gets it! A Great Primer...
Finally! A Design book that gets right into it, without talking down to the reader or smothering them with useless information that they can't apply in real-world designs. Read more
