Product Description

Product Description

The "Upanishads" are the sacred writings of Hinduism. They are perhaps the greatest of all the books in the history of world religions. Their origins predate recorded history, being revealed to the Rishis of the Vedic civilization some 5000 to 10,000 years ago. Many see them as the kernel of the mystical, philosophical truths that are the basis of the Higher World religion of Hinduism, their cradle, of which Buddhism is a successor and Judaism is an offshoot. With Islam and Christianity being offshoots of Judaism, this makes them the foundational documents for understanding and practising religion today. Much of the original text of the "Upanishads" is archaic and occasionally corrupted, but it does convey a moral and ethical thrust that is abundantly clear. Alan Jacobs uses modern free verse to convey the essential meaning and part of the original text. He omits Sanskrit words as far as possible and the commentary provided is contemporary rather than ancient.

About the Author

2.0 out of 5 stars Garnished perhaps?, 18 Aug 2009

The translator seems to shy away from a literal translation in favour of saying the 'meaning' of certain passages, which in the context of a religious book can obviously cause problems. A much better system would have been a literal translation combined with a commentary, as Swami Vivekananda did in his translations of the Yoga Sutras, from the same publisher. This way a reader can differentiate between what the translator is saying and what the Upanishads are saying.

Read this book if you enjoy attempting to read through the translation, if you enjoy taking what is spoon fed to you, or if you happen to have the exact same viewpoint as the translator (what that is is uncertain, he just describes himself as a 'meditator').

5.0 out of 5 stars All there is is That, 13 Mar 2004
By Paula Marvelly - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Principal Upanishads (Divine Conversation) (Paperback)
`Upanishads breathe throughout the sacred spirit of the Vedas!' wrote Arthur Schopenhauer, `How every line is full of sure, definite and harmonizing significance! How out of every page confront us deep, original, elevated thoughts, while a higher and highly sacred earnestness vibrates through the whole!'

Alan Jacobs has produced yet another literary masterpiece in his transcreation of the 'Principal Upanishads', which together with his 'Bhagavad Gita', aim to convey the nondualist teaching (Advaita Vedanta) of the ancient Indian scriptures as well as explore the author's own poetic expression.

There are over 200 Upanishads or `secret teachings' in existence however 12 of them have become universally acknowledged as the primary vehicles of the Divine revelation leading to Self-Realisation. And the 'Isa Upanishad' is traditionally placed at the beginning of the sequence, setting the tone and establishing the essential Truth that ultimately everything is as is should be:

All is perfect, so perfectly perfect!
Whatever being lives, moves
And breathes on Earth
At every level from atom
To galaxy is absolutely perfect in its place
Precise and choreographed,
Because `That' flows from the Glory of God,
The Lord,
The Self,
Consciousness . . .

Each Upanishad is supplemented with the author's own commentary, drawing on nondualist cross references to other writers and beliefs - Homer and Plato, Aurobindo and Schopenhauer, the teachings of Jesus and Ramana Maharshi.

The message of Advaita Vedanta has been gently flourishing in the West - Alan Jacob's 'Principal Upanishads' will only serve to illuminate further this blessed Truth:

That all there is is `That',
The I am-ness
Of consciousness, Reality, Love,
Self, Awareness,
I am `That'
`That' all there is is Brahman, God.
Sat, Chit, Ananda.
