In February 2010 I took my daughter to see The Princess & The Frog at the cinema (we have since also purchased the DVD). I was left with one big question - who loved it more, me or my 4 year old!? The story, the characters, the animation, the songs - all spot on.
Let's start with the story. The story was so much different to what I expected - I expected to sit through 97 minutes of the popular fairytale 'The Frog Prince' (Princess kisses the frog and he turns into a handsome prince. The end) but boy, was I wrong! It wasn't a predictable storyline, even for adults, and had twists and turns all the way through. There was plenty of suspense, plenty of laughs and plenty of emotional scenes - the only way Disney know how!
The film includes 7 original songs. It had been a long time since I had seen a new Disney film (or any kids film for that matter, with the exception of Enchanted) with singing and dancing in it, so this was quite a treat. Many of the songs were a mixture of jazz, blues and zydeco and were really catchy (I saw more than a few toes tapping in the cinema!) - they really captured the mood of the film perfectly.Read more ›
What Disney has done here is they have taken a step backwards from computer graphics, too-well known celebrity voices and modernistic soundtracks and have released something that is breathtaking, and incredibly reminiscent of the period in the eighties and the ninties when they were producing some truly amazing stuff. The setting of a jazz-aged Big Easy is brought to life by colourful and exaggerated (not realistic) animation, the hamminess is there, the sweet theatre soundtracks, the classic love story with some absolutely hysterical hilarity thrown in for good meaure. I just really can't fault this film. It reminds me of the days when Disney was producing films like Aladdin and Beauty & the Beast, etc. This is an instant classic, and I would advise to buy before Disney takes it upon themselves to dump it into that annoying "vault" of theirs (their desperation to keep us paying ridiculous sums of money for films that have been out for decades, in otherwords).
The Plot: A low-working class waitress known as Tiana is desperate to make her dream (and her father's dream) come alive by intending to buy a restaurant, and is thoroughly determined to work every hour God sends with in order to do so.Read more ›
Have a sneaky suspicion that the reason it didn't hit the big time is because the heroine is black, which is plain wrong. Absolutely top class film.
