Princess Sylvie persuades her father, the king, to leave the palace gardens and walk in the woods. The king is unsure. What might be in the woods? To be honest we are a little disappointed in this book, despite being huge Elsa Beskow fans. It is only available in a large format, whereas we (like Beatrix Potter!) believe small books, like the Floris mini book editions of other books by Beskow, are better for small hands. There is a story with a plot but a book like The Children of the Forest which is more episodic still manages to be far more engaging. Our 4 year old loves doggies and princesses and bears and her daddy is called Oskar but she still does not ask for this book to be read to her which means it is not a well loved book in our family.

Sweet, but not my favorite Elsa Beskow

It's a cute story and beautifully illustrated, but not to the standards of many other Elsa Beskow books. It uses simpler language and fewer words, and the story is not as captivating. It is not a book we reach for very often. I still gave it four stars because all of her books are superior quality children's literature.
