Reviews

Magical, musical romantic drama from director Seijun Suzuki. Tanuki-hime (Zhang Ziyi) is a racoon spirit princess who falls in love with Amechiyo (Jo Odagiri), a human prince who has been banished from his father's realm. Suzuki includes all styles of music, from Kabuki theatre to rock 'n' roll and operetta.

I first saw this film at the movies, when I told my friends I had gone to see it they asked if I liked it and what it was about, I answered that I did like it very much then came the tricky part explaining the film.

Basically it is a fairy tale of sorts where a Prince falls in love with a Princess, nothing wierd there, however the Princess is in reality a Raccoon disguised as a human. The film jumps between the human and Raccoon reality with animation thrown in along the way, and by the way the film is in fact an operetta so it is full of songs for good measure.

The film stars Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang even though this is a Japanese film, she speaks her part in Chinese but sings in both Chinese and Japanese.

From the reviews I read before I saw the film, you will either love it or hate it.

I loved the film and I think the best way to approach this movie is most importantly with a sense of humour and to anticipate having a fun time, with some daft songs, amazing colour and bizarre characters in a world not unlike those created by Studio Ghibli.

This is a truly astonishing film. I continue to be amazed at the films coming out of the far East, especially Japan. This one shows, quite openly, their ability to take as they please from other cultures, jumble it all up in a giant pot, and still it comes out 100% Japanese. In this case there are clear references to Buddhism, Catholicism as well as ancient tradition, funky Western music and rap (yes, rap), spoken Chinese, Portugese and Italian, all jumbled up amongst traditional Japanese language, music and culture. And yet never for a moment is this anything other than a classic native story.
It is an operetta based on a traditional story just as one finds in any culture, the classic story of forbidden love where, despite the odds, love wins out. But do not think that this is just some pantomime. This is a cavalcade of extraordinary sets, costumes, singing, dance, criminally cute girls, bizarre instruments, stylised fights and abstract concepts. All the gooey drama and occasional twinkly music did not stop me being riveted to my seat. Not one bit is not filled with fascination. It also contains production techniques it's hard to imagine anyone in the West daring to use.
To the uninitiated in Eastern film, it may be too much to take in, but I highly recommend this film. It is a PG and I would imagine that the young will find it much more accessible than many of their parents.

This film is, like, TOTALLY mad. Utterly bonkers. It's a film for kids for adults for film lovers for opera fans for lovers of japanese cinema.
Director Seijun Suzuki is a living legend and PRINCESS RACCOON is proof (if proof be need be!).
Rich andbeautiful and strange, this is a film in love with cinema and crazy with it.
Oh, and Zhang Ziyi is in it.

This is a rare gem, but some people get thrown off by the abstract Portuguese background, but they forget that they were the first Europeans there. It's kabuki theater come to film!
