Amazon.co.uk Review

Okay, sure, if you're a ten-year-old girl, this sequel to Disney's 2001 hit will completely transfix you. How could it not? Bubbly Mia (Anne Hathaway), the American teenager who in the first film learned she was actually European royalty, finishes college and--whoosh!--heads off to Genovia, where she’s given a closet full of fabulous clothes and jewelry in preparation to rule the kingdom under the tutelage of grandmother Julie Andrews. Throw in a horse and a volatile but innocent romantic attraction to the dreamy young stud (Chris Pine) who's also vying for the throne, and you have the kind of stuff that prepubescent girls rhapsodize about at slumber parties. Oh--and there's a slumber party here, too, featuring a bevy of cute, international young princesses mattress-surfing down a giant slide. Resistance is futile. For the rest of us, though, director Garry Marshall has managed to make his Laverne & Shirley days seem positively Shakespearean in comparison. The movie is precious, padded (two hours!), and pandering twaddle; Andrews, in her role as Queen Mother, is even shoehorned into a faux-hip-hop duet with Disney Channel favorite Raven (one of many, many grueling moments intended to sell the soundtrack). Then the film takes a maddening left turn three-quarters of the way into the plot and decides that, despite all the preceding consumption and connubial fantasies to the contrary, it's really about feminine emancipation. But don’t worry--what causes you to smack your forehead in frustration will go right over the heads of its hypnotized target market. --Steve Wiecking

A Royal Splendour! 8 Oct 2005
By Uenna TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
PD 2 continued to delight where PD1 left off. Julie Andrews as Queen Claris and Anne Hathaway as Princess Mia gave a heart warming performance in this delightful continuation of the Princess Diaries. This is simply one of the best movies on dvd, the story line is captivating as well as simple, graceful and full of meaning. Gary Marshall did well to convey the search for one's identity, and how self belief and living by one's conviction no matter what can enable us to find ourselves. As Mia is transformed by experiences from a clumsy gold-hearted Princess to a self assured, humble and generous Queen of Genovia, the lessons of life which serve to fashion and transform her are very well depicted amidst the humour and comedy of it all. This is a heart warming, romantic, fariy tale- like movie. A delightful treat for all ages, a must see and a must have. I highly reccomend it.

A RIGHT ROYAL FILM 25 Jan 2006
Format:DVD
This film was excellant. It had something for everyone in the family, whatever their age. It had a good, plausible storyline, was well acted by all participants and a pleasure to watch. The archery "practicing scenes" were very funny. The ending was "neat", yet still left the way open for "Princess Diaries 3" if they want to make it. For a relaxing couple of hours this is a must watch film.

Love it! 29 Mar 2005
Format:DVD
I HATE chick flicks. Despise them. 100%. Could not think of anything worse. I thought this film would be boring dribble. Oh I was wrong!

I have never seen the first princess diaries and when babysitting my younger cousins they and my girlfriend persuaded me to put this on and I frankly wanted to tear off my arm and beat myself with it, but, alas! It was funny, sweet, charming and loveable. The stunning Anne Hathaway portrays Mia Thermopolis Princess Of Genovia, who I am suddenly in love with, and Dame Julie Andrews plays the wise grandmother, teaching her granddaughter how to be a queen when Andrews is too old. The story consists of her having to have a husband to rule the thrown or she cannot take control of beloved Genovia.

It has brilliant situations, but come on! Its Disney so everything ends well, and although predtictable thouroughly entertaining for its 1 1/2 hour duration. It's maybe not for complexed film-goers, but still great fun. Even myself, a cynical male teenager found myself really entertained. The fact that it stood alone from the first film and was totally understandable without the prior knowlegde of the first adventure (I havn't seen it) it was great!

Children will love it, me and my girlfriend loved it, and its a great film. Performed well, written well, and made well.

Awesome.
