Synopsis
Director Rob Reiner breathes vividly colored cinematic life into William Goldman's THE PRINCESS BRIDE, effectively evoking the wondrous, wide-eyed spirit of the witty 1973 novel. When a sick boy (Fred Savage) receives a visit from his doting grandfather (Peter Falk) who intends to read to him from his favorite book, he's not exactly pleased to be extracted from his world of video games. However, his mood quickly changes as he, along with the viewer, is transported to a place out of time--to Florin, a kingdom in the ultimate imaginary land, complete with dashing heroes, cowardly princes, rhyming giants, shrieking eels, rodents of unusual size, fancy swordfights, and yes...even some kissing.
The lovely Buttercup (Robin Wright) learns that "As you wish" really means "I love you" when she falls for her charming farmhand, Westley (Cary Elwes). While trying to seek his fortune, however, Westley disappears at sea, an apparent victim of the Dread Pirate Roberts, who takes no prisoners. A few years later, Buttercup, engaged to the oily Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), is kidnapped by an oddball trio of rogues--brains, Vizzini (Wallace Shawn); brawn, Fezzik (Andre the Giant); and sword, Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin in a standout performance). As they sail away toward the Cliffs of Insanity, they notice the pursuit of a man in black...and the adventure begins. A clever fairy tale for all ages, THE PRINCESS BRIDE is arguably one of the funniest and most entertaining films of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're going to get it on DVD, this is the one. , 11 Jan 2009
By Valerie (England) - See all my reviews
This, as other have noted, has been a long time coming. I was almost about to take the plunge and buy one of the NTSC Special Editions and am glad I waited. The 2 disc edition pulls together (nearly) all the extras that have been sporadically available through the US editions. Disc one has the film, with commentary by director Rob Reiner and writer William Goldman. The second disc contains the extras -

1987 Original Featurette
1987 Making of Featurette
As You Wish Documentary
Cary Elwes On Set Video
TV Spots
Photo Gallery
International Trailer
Theatrical Trailer

For a film with such a cult following it's curious how little of its making and development has been explored, and the extras go a long way to remedying this, showing lots of behind the scenes footage and interviews with the crew involved. I didn't feel there were *quite* enough, but then I'm not sure I'd ever be happy no matter how many they put in (I own this film on TV-taped VHS, proper VHS, VCD, DVD, plus 7 copies in 5 different editions of the novel). It's released by Lionsgate, who have attended to the details like new cover artwork instead of the increasingly syrupy photoshopped US covers, thoughtful menus and transition screens. The low point is the 3 or 4 unnecessary ads for upcoming releases - really guys, they'll be old in 6 months and your viewers will have to flick through them, irritated, forever. The quality is good and crisp on the feature and main extras, with video-transfer noise on the older stuff.

Clearly, this is my favourite film in the entire world so I think everyone should buy a copy. With the current price difference between the Special and normal editions, go for this one if you're thinking about buying it and here's hoping it's wuv, twoo wuv. If you're already a devotee, this edition is a blessed arrangement, a dweam wiffin a dweam (at least until Buttercup's Baby is finished and filmed).
Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Princess Bride, 25 May 2009
By Kurt Harwood - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of my favorite movies, a true classic that has the best kiss, a sword fight choreographed by Bob Anderson (did Darth Vader light saber scenes) that is insane, and includes a six fingered man and Andre the giant.

Per Wikipedia this film is number 50 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies" and number 88 on The American Film Institute's (AFI) "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Passions" listing the 100 greatest film love stories of all time.

It is THE story of True Love and will put you in stitches.

Highly recommended.

This may be best fairytale/adventure/comedy movie. A fantastic story-line interwoven with some sublime comedic moments.
