This is the second book in the Ascension trilogy, following on from 'The Pirate Prince.'
We meet Darius Santiago at the end of the first book as a young 14 year old lad who aids Lazar reclaim his throne. For the last 20 years, he has been King Lazar's spy and assassin. His weakness is the king's daughter, Princess Serafina. She has wanted him her whole life, but Darius has always kept a distance between them, since he is no prince and isn't 'worthy' of her. This hasn't stopped him chasing after anything in a skirt, and Serafina once catches him at it. Her father is trying to get a husband for his daughter, and has chosen a Russian Prince who is very pompous and arrogant. Darius hates him, but knows he can't do anything. When it is feared Serafina will be kidnapped, she persuades her father to allow Darius to take her away into hiding. Darius isn't happy, as he worries what he may do when alone with her. Eventually, a relationship develops, but Serafina wants to find out the truth about Darius' past, something he is adamant she'll never learn. We also see the introduction of Prince Rafe, Serafina's younger brother who is the protagnist of the last book in the series.
Overall, the story is very good, 4.5/5. My only problem was the Americanisms of words that came through, which am sure weren't used in Europe, even in the 19th century!
