Product Description

Praise for the Imager Portfolio:
"The prolific Modesitt kicks off a new fantasy series that boasts an early modern setting--think Victorian times without the pollution.... Modesitt's capacity to wring new surprises from stock ideas remains undiminished." --"Kirkus Reviews "on "Imager" "Modesitt writes some of the most interesting characters in Fantasy. He is a master of developing young heroes. Fans of the author's "Recluce" and "Corus" series will enjoy this series as well."
--"SFRevu "on "Imager's Challenge"
"Modesitt has drawn a superb portrait of an honest and powerful man handed a crisis that even he may not be able to handle.... Extremely satisfying." --"Booklist" on "Imager's Intrigue

""There is something so satisfying about picking up a novel by an author who's consistently good at his or her craft: the heft of the book, the scent of the ink, the awareness that what will happen in the pages will be truly wondrous. It is no different with Modesitt's latest travel in the world of the Imagers; although Scholar is tied to the other books, this is a prequel that can stand alone. Quaeryt is a fascinating character, and his trials and journey are action packed and yet intellectual."
--"RT Book Reviews, 4 stars "on "Scholar"

Product Description

The thrilling follow-up to Scholar—in which, after discovering a coup attempt and preventing a bloody civil war, Quaeryt was appointed princeps of Tilbor—begins a new episode in the young Imager's life. Now second only to the governor, and still hiding his powers as an Imager, Quaeryt is enjoying his new position, as well as his marriage to Lord Bhayar’s youngest sister, Vaelora, when a volcanic eruption devastates the old capital of Telaryn.
He and his wife are dispatched to Extela, Telaryn’s capitol city, to replace the governor killed in the eruption. Quaeryt and Vaelora must restore order to a city filled with chaos and corruption, and do so quickly. The regiment under his command must soon depart to bolster Telaryn’s border defenses against a neighboring ruler who sees the volcanic devastation as an opportunity for invasion and conquest.

More About the Author

No matter what anyone claims, writers are made, not born, and what and how they write is the result of just how they were made... or how they made themselves. I began by writing poetry, which was published only in small magazines, and then went on to write administrative reports while I was a U.S. Naval aviator, followed by research papers, speeches, economic and technical studies, and policy and briefing papers. Along the way, I've been a delivery boy; a lifeguard; an unpaid radio disc jockey; a U.S. Navy pilot; a market research analyst; a real estate agent; director of research for a political campaign; legislative assistant and staff director for U.S. Congressmen; Director of Legislation and Congressional Relations for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; a consultant on environmental, regulatory, and communications issues; a college lecturer and writer in residence; and unpaid treasurer of a civic music arts association.

As a result, my writing tends to incorporate all of the above, in addition to the science fiction I read from a very early age. After close to sixty published novels, and perhaps a score of short stories, it's fairly clear to me that "what kind of writer" I am for readers tends to depend on which of my books each reader has read.

Along the way, I've weathered eight children, a fondness for three-piece suits [which has deteriorated into a love of vests], a brown Labrador, a white cockapoo, an energetic Shih-tzu, two scheming dachshunds, a capricious spaniel, a crazy Saluki-Aussie, and various assorted pet rodents. Finally, in 1989, to escape nearly twenty years of occupational captivity in Washington, D.C., I escaped to New Hampshire. There I was fortunate enough to find and marry a lovely lyric soprano, and we moved to Cedar City, Utah, in 1993, where she directs the voice and opera program at Southern Utah University and where I attempt to create and manage chaos in the process of writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious and enjoyable 22 Jun 2012

I have enjoyed the Imager books so far. The system of psionic powers that underpins the background to these stories is well worked out, although there is one large inconsistency. In the first 3 books of the Imager portfolio, the Imager has to sleep alone because of the danger to his sleeping partner if he images in his sleep. There has been no sign of the need for this in the present book. That apart, the system holds together very well. The plot was sufficiently complex to maintain my interest throughout, the main protagonists just about escape being over-simplistic, and Vaelora's character shows signs of developing nicely. I'm looking forward to the next one.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is simply not worth nearly 12.00 20 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read all of Modesitt's books they are great I have them in hard copy. I travel a lot and so use my kindle. I also enjoy reading books more than once. As the new book is out soon I thought I might remind myself of the story. I reluctantly pre ordered the next book in kindle format for the exorbitant price of just short of 11.00. Why is it that ebooks cost more than hard copy? That has to be crazy. Come on Mr Modesitt stop being greedy, your fans deserve better. I am afraid that until the prices drop to become more reasonable I for one won't be buying any more of your books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gordon's Review 16 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This novel continues the career of Quaeryt and as usual Modesitt builds a full character foreground and background. There is a sort of formulaic approach to this (and in other series by the same author) and on this occasion it did not have the normal resonance. Can't put my finger on it, but as a continuation of a prior 'good' novel, this lacked a similar sparkle. However, I shall be purchasing the next two books in the series when they are available in the hope of returning to a more gripping standard.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing 8 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Modesitt's books and was looking forward to this one. However, I felt it was rushed and rather formulaic, the moral quandaries were less interesting than usual and the characters less compelling. A shame
