Book Description

31 Jan 2014 Prince Valiant (Book 8)
This volume begins with the second half of the 15-month-long Roman epic 'The Missionaries', which includes a dramatic, life-changing experience for Prince Geoffrey (aka 'Arf') at its climax. Then, after a brief stay back in Camelot - where the irrepressible Val and his friend Gawain indulge in some not-very-knightly pranks that end up costing them dearly - the trio are summoned back to Thule, where Aleta presents Val with new twin daughters! Vol. 8 is scanned from Fosters personal collection of syndicate proofs, also features an article by Foster scholar Brian M. Kane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comics at the finest! 16 Feb 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
If Milt Caniff is the Rembrandt of the comics then Hal Foster must be the better-artist-than-Rembrandt-of-greater-standing. This volume has page after page of simply stunning works wonderfully constructed as Val traverses medieval Europe from the Orkneys to the Med. There are also a number of significant events that occur during this run which I won't detail despite the spoilers being 60 years old. I think it was the Duke of Windsor who described Prince Valiant as the finest literature he'd seen - I for one do not disagree.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing landscapes 26 Feb 2014
By Suzanne Sanders - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Adventure keeps coming, but there's always time to notice the brilliant landscapes. Surprises and unpredictable characters keep the adrenaline up, but they don't forget the practicalities -- making fire, caring for horses, etc. -- unlike some historical storytellers. Keeps it realistic, even as monsters or spirits attack. You can tell it was written by someone who had made his way in the wild.
The drawing is so good, I wish it had come in the era of Bill Watterson and Calvin and Hobbes, when the color printing in papers grew more subtle and precise.

5.0 out of 5 stars the classiest comic ever 5 Mar 2014
By Richard A. Luc - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
beautiful execution of line and color, able plotting backed by scrupulous research - except when frank fantasy entered of course- made this the best comic strip ever.
My father used to say "If the paper has Prince Valiant on Sundays, it's a really good paper."
There are too few really good papers any more
