Prince of Thieves concentrates on a group of professional bank robbers who obviously create victims in their wake. But not so obvious are the feelings one of the robbers has for their latest victim, a woman still being quizzed by the FBI. Do not make the mistake of thinking this a love story, although the protagonists' emotions are thoroughly explored; this is a heist novel, beautifully crafted, accurately portrayed, exceptionally well paced and with an ending that'll make you want to begin reading the whole thing again.
Chuck doesn't just write prose, he writes 'prose that flows' (sorry about that, but it's true). His use of similes is quite extraordinary. I remember my jaw actually falling open one time.
The depth of character and characterisation is fulfilled to its maximum, drip-feeding the reader with information until a rounded person is left, and a person with whom one feels empathy, a person whose actions are totally understandable. The tension between the robbers was palpable.
Entwined within the main story are a host of subplots that merged with the main plot flawlessly, complimented it. Suspense too is thick on the ground with enough surprises to keep you guessing, to keep you urging the characters to do the right thing.
If you haven't read Chuck Hogan before, then I strongly urge you to treat yourself.
