Book Description

4 Sep 2006
In a blue-collar Boston neighbourhood, a planned robbery takes place. The men wear masks. Their guns are drawn on the pretty bank manager, Claire Keesey, who nervously recites the alarm code, and the tumblers within the huge vault fall. The timing and execution are brilliant. It could be the perfect job. A huge sum of cash is stolen, but so too is one man's heart, as Doug MacRay, the brains behind the tough, tight-knit crew of thieves, falls for Claire. But she has another admirer: FBI agent Adam Frawley, who is beginning to zero in on the gang, and for Doug, pursuing Claire may be his most dangerous act of all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prince of Crime 16 Aug 2005
Format:Paperback
Chuck Hogan has snatched the 'My Favourite Crime Writer' spot from notables that included Ian Rankin and James Ellroy.

Prince of Thieves concentrates on a group of professional bank robbers who obviously create victims in their wake. But not so obvious are the feelings one of the robbers has for their latest victim, a woman still being quizzed by the FBI. Do not make the mistake of thinking this a love story, although the protagonists' emotions are thoroughly explored; this is a heist novel, beautifully crafted, accurately portrayed, exceptionally well paced and with an ending that'll make you want to begin reading the whole thing again.

Chuck doesn't just write prose, he writes 'prose that flows' (sorry about that, but it's true). His use of similes is quite extraordinary. I remember my jaw actually falling open one time.

The depth of character and characterisation is fulfilled to its maximum, drip-feeding the reader with information until a rounded person is left, and a person with whom one feels empathy, a person whose actions are totally understandable. The tension between the robbers was palpable.

Entwined within the main story are a host of subplots that merged with the main plot flawlessly, complimented it. Suspense too is thick on the ground with enough surprises to keep you guessing, to keep you urging the characters to do the right thing.

If you haven't read Chuck Hogan before, then I strongly urge you to treat yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hogan's hero 24 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Prince of Thieves is the source novel for Ben Affleck's The Town. Hogan is one of the great Boston thriller writers, joining Lehane and George V. Higgins in capturing the unique Irish thug culture. Having seen the film first, I knew what to expect and I admit, whatever downtime there is in this book, it is more than made up for over the long haul (this is a long book in very small type).

The story is classic - the bank robber gets a conscience, finds a girl and tries to run after one last job.But it all feels fresh as Hogan tells it. His writing is clear, his images are memorable, his characters, wonderfully flawed. Not as surprising as Lehane's Kenzie and Gennaro books, not a poetic and deep as Mystic River, not a saavy or dialog rich as Higgins, Prince of Thieves manages to capture the heart through the pulsating plot, the frantic heists and the almost believable love story.

His hero Doug is beautifully drawn and makes the whole novel worth it's high rating. And in case you care, The Town is a nearly perfect translation of the book - making Affleck (after Lehane's Gone Baby Gone), the film poet of lowlife Boston.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 3 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I loved this book so much, the characters gripped me from the beginning. I routed for the "bad" guy all the way through... his decisions had me wanting to scream at him to choose differently! Was very much immersed in it!
