The early videos like 'I wanna be your lover' are funny to watch and I am happy to see my personal favourite video 'Raspberry Beret' included here. Overall a wasted opportunity. Could have been a timeless collection for the 20th Century's most talented musician instead as I said in the title of this review a bad collection.
The main problem with this video collection, however, is how many video's it leaves out, Prince himself has said he doesn't enjoy making music videos, which is something of a contradictory statement considering he's made over 70 of them over the course of 25 years now. I'm sure Warner Bros. had enough room to put double the amount of videos on here, so it's hard to see why certain performances are left out...no 'When Doves Cry'? no 'U Got The Look'? no Gett Off? It's understandable that particular tracks were omitted from the Hits Cd collection, but why should songs which DO feature on that collection not show up on this DVD...
With the main drags out the way it's best to focus on the videos which are here...such as '1999', 'Raspberry Beret' and 'Kiss'; all of them are excellent and despite previous reviews the picture transfer to DVD is surprisingly good.
The most impressive videos though are the early, pre-1999 vids.
'Controversy' still remains one of his classic performance videos, and 'Dirty Mind' and 'Uptown' are both highly enjoyable to watch even if Prince hasn't got all his moves nailed down yet.
'7' though, is probably the main highlight and it is easily one of Prince's best videos of the 90's.
On the whole The Hits is a dissapointment to many fans due to so many videos being left out, but the quality of what IS on here more than makes up for it, and it's a wothwhile purchase.
The few "proper" videos are very poorly transferred indeeed and look very dated. The quality is so bad on some that you wonder if your set up is wrong for a moment. I am surprised an artist of Prince`s apparent stature and sensibilities allows this sort of embarrasing junk to get off the cutting room floor.
The shame is that it could have been so much better had a more discerning effort been made.
For an object lesson in how it should be done, see Ladies and Gentlemen, The Best of George Michael DVD.
