THE DAY THAT TRAGEDY STRUCK

"Gasping back tears of horror and anger, Varren shimmied his way down the well. In the circle of light above his head three ugly, scarred, war-bitten faces appeared, staring down at him. One of them was readying his crossbow. Varren released his grip and fell straight down into the water. A crossbow quarrel whooshed into the water next to him. He hauled himself out, and into a side tunnel just above the water level. He’d used this way in and out of the castle for years. He hurried off down the tunnel, the sounds of battle fading away behind him..."

4.0 out of 5 stars A Breathless Rush, an Exciting Tale 25 Sep 2012

It took me a while to figure out what it was that I liked so much about this book, but I think I have it now. It reads like a tale that is being told by an enthusiastic story-teller. It is not literary or writerly, but feels like a transcript of an actual spoken story. As you read you can almost see an accomplished troubadour stalking around a hushed pub room as he spins and embroiders his tale.

This is not an easy thing to do. Usually that sort of effect is marred by preciousness, or a lack of command of tone or detail. But in this story the tone is informal but consistent, and atmosphere is not sacrificed in service of advancing the plot. We have briefly sketched but believable characters. We have some exposition, but in service of brevity and clarity. We have a hero with more depth and character than is usually encountered in such middle grade fare. We have lofty themes and low humor, and adventure. We have energy.

I never like it when books are described as appropriate for "reluctant readers", because that's often shorthand for low-brow or fart based or insultingly simple. But, this book seems to be the type of book that would grab and carry any reader, involve him or her, and wrap up with a flourish. That's pretty good.
